The Dress Code Argument

It’s not there to drag down girls’ self esteem, and that’s just foolish to think so.

When boy’s start coming to school in crop tops, booty shorts, skirts above the knee, and low-cut strapless tanks, you’ll see people complain about the exact same things. These are all things I saw girls wear at my high school and it was always a pain.

Male, Female, what have you, no one want’s so see your underwear when you’re taking the stairs to class and we happen to look up and catch a glance by accident because you didn’t wear a long enough skirt. We don’t want to see your god damn cleavage when you bend down to pick up your backpack.

Yes, dressing in a way that makes you comfortable is a good thing, but that’s what after school and the weekends are for. Rules exist for a reason, and they’re for everyone’s best interests.

If you want to steer the dress code debate more toward boys, give them shit when they wear their pants to low, their boxers are hanging out. GIVE THEM HELL. I always hated that.

The other day this girl was wearing ripped jeans and got dress coded for having some rips "up too high" a few classes later she tells her friend, who happens to be a guy, and was wearing ripped jeans with bigger and slightly higher rips in his jeans. No teacher told him anything, not a single thing. And some people have the nerve to say dress codes aren't just meant for girls?

Apparently there was a "color guard party" that I did not get invited to and I was talked about. Mainly the clothes I wore to the practices that were held after school, for auditions. I was told that the captain thought it was "unacceptable" for me to wear tank tops to the practices. It was all girls, I thought I was covered enough, I was comfortable, and there is nothing in the school dress code policy saying I can not wear tank tops, it is fine. In fact my school is one of the most lenient on dress code policy's. Strapless dresses, short shorts, tank tops, are all allowed. Anything, but a hat is permitted in the building really.

I did not really understand, but went on with practice, I was wearing a tank top and shorts because it was comfortable out and I was not entirely sure what we would be doing that day. As we practiced I noticed the captain focused on me more than anyone, asking if I had the moves down and to show her repeatedly on multiple occasions. I'm not the best at flags so I just brushed it off. 

Today, my mom came home and told me that I could not wear tank tops to practice because I am "top heavy". (it gets a little confusing here sorry) The captain's, boyfriend's mother works with mine and she relayed it to her to tell my mother to tell me. She never said a work to me on the subject. I burst into tears hearing this. I did not enjoy practice, there was already so much drama I did not and still don't want to deal with this. I actually felt more suicidal at the practice than I have in a few months. True, I am a 38DD chest, but that shouldn't dictate if I can wear tank tops or not to a practice where I sweat a great amount. It should not matter at all. We are not near the boys in band (this shouldn't be an issue, but we all know it is), I do not "hang out" or at least I try not to. I don't even want to be apart of this group but I have been told multiple times that I am "not allowed to quit". The whole situation makes me feel targeted and I'd appreciate any kind words or encouragement I can get.
