Because My Heart Races Every Time I See You (Kam Hugh/La Grande Dame) - Kali
A/N: Happy belated birthday, Kam! <3
This was heavily inspired by Oh My Girl's song 'Nonstop', because Kam made a post on Instagram with this song. It's adorable, so I'd totally recommend checking it out! It also explains all the mentions of fluttering hearts, aha.
DRF ruined my dreams, but also gave me a new ship to love. Hope you enjoy this!
Summary:
Kam spent too long thinking about her best friend, all of a sudden. It was driving her absolutely insane.
Dame’s brown hair was in her usual messy ponytail for whenever she needed to focus, yet she looked different to Kam.
The two girls were sitting around Kam’s dinner table, textbooks spread all over it as they tutored each other for finals week, although most of the tutoring duties had passed on to Dame, considering she was the only one of them actually paying attention to the content. She had nagged Kam about it initially, but both girls wanted nothing more than to ditch their schoolwork and go outside together to enjoy the warm, sunny afternoon weather, so she was kind enough to give her a free pass.
If only it were the weather or the boredom bothering her.
Kam was painfully aware of how weird she’d been acting around her best friend for the past two weeks, however each and every attempt to find a solution for her issue came fruitless. She felt a little weird, lonelier than usual and more attached to Dame’s presence, whilst wishing to avoid her at all costs. It always seemed like Dame was different, speaking differently, wearing something unusual, when her conscious mind knew she was the exact same as before. It was Kam herself who reacted oddly to everything she did.
She spent too long thinking about her best friend, all of a sudden. It was driving her absolutely insane.
The blonde sighed, her fingertips touching the braided crown she had styled her hair with to make sure it was still pristine. She did at least six other hairstyles before settling on the one after Dame texted her, saying she would be coming over because Kam clearly did not know the first thing necessary for their Biology exam on Monday and she would not watch her friend crash and burn.
“Fine,” Dame exhaled next to her, one of her eyebrows raised. “You can have five minutes of phone time if it’ll make you stop sighing like this is detention.”
Kam giggled, pleased when she saw the much, much taller girl do the same. Both of them had their phones in hand in no time, which made the blonde suspect Dame was also in desperate need of a tiny break from Calculus and Biology. She instantly opened Instagram, a tiny pout appearing on her rosy lips as she watched stories of Soa, Nicky and Bertha hanging out together at an ice cream parlor, definitely enjoying the weather better than she was.
“Can we finish early and go out for ice cream?” she asked Dame, batting her eyelashes in an attempt to further convince her.
Dame gently poked her cheek in response. She was smiling as she shook her head in denial to the request, and it made Kam’s stomach feel funny.
She stuck out her tongue at her before going back to Instagram, tummy doing another weird turn when she heard Dame laugh in response. She scrolled past all the posts quickly, wanting to absorb as much useless content as humanly possible in such a short timespan, only coming to a stop when she saw a post from one of her favorite accounts.
It was an account that would post ‘what-if’ scenarios, more often than not completely random. It made Kam happy to read them and imagine what she would do if she came home one day and found out her house was infested with dragons, or if she could spend her life never sleeping.
This time, the post was a little more cliché than their usual, which did not stop it from being their most interesting ever. She even felt silly about how excited she got over it.
"Hey, Dame," she called her friend.
Dame lifted her eyes from her phone, her long fingers stopping their previous incessant typing. "Yeah, ange?"
"What-if post just dropped!" She announced excitedly, Dame shooting her a knowing smile in reply. "It says: if you were trapped on an island alone with your best friend, what would you do?"
Dame stopped smiling.
"Oh, wow… that's scary to even think about," she frowned at the question, her head tilting sideways and her cheeks acquiring a pinkish tone, as if she had just ran for a minute straight. "Honestly, Kam? I don't think I can tell you."
Kam's heart fluttered a little.
"Why not?" she asked, trying to sound playful when her cheeks were also rosy. She felt something in the way Dame gazed at her, like she could burn her with just her chocolate eyes.
The brunette seemed to instantly regret her answer, her voice almost sharp when she replied back. "I don't know. What if it actually happens? I don't want to spoil the scenario."
Kam huffed, offended. Why would she not say it? "You're no fun! You have to say it, those are the rules."
Their phone time was up, but Dame did not seem to notice. "Rules? Since when does what-if have rules?"
"I'm the one who asked the question," the blonde clarified, crossing her arms over her chest, like a tiny queen. "I get to make the rules!"
"Kamille."
"Dame."
She was not going to drop it, and Dame knew it. There was a primal need to know , as if her answer could perhaps solve the mess of feelings she was going through, hoping her friend could meet her halfway and explain to her why she hurt so much when they were together, but even more when she was not around. She felt insane; bullheaded and insane.
Dame was the one to sigh this time. She closed her eyes, opened them, paused. She took forever. "If we were alone together, I would probably kiss you."
Oh.
"We're alone right now," she blurted out, her lips moving faster than her brain could.
Kam's heart was racing so bad she could almost hear it through her shirt. There was a very real possibility her best friend would kiss her in the next minute, yet instead of being grossed out or terrified, she felt a sudden wave of desire hit her. She had known from the first time they met, a year and a half before, that Dame was the most beautiful person she would ever see. Even though her stupid, little brain failed to make the connection before, it was so clear now. So annoyingly clear.
Two realizations at once.
She was attracted to her best friend. She had feelings for her.
Dame said something, but she wasn't paying attention anymore. It felt like the sun itself had swallowed her dining room, the abrupt heat making her breathless. "Huh?"
The taller girl blinked, her lips slightly parted. She was wearing lip gloss, Kam found herself way too interested in finding out whether it was flavored or not. "You have no idea what you're saying."
"Today is the first warm day we've had in months," Kam whispered, her eyes chasing Dame's own, chin tilted upwards to make up for their height difference. "You could be outside, everyone is outside. You're here with me."
Dame nodded, in a clear motion for her to continue. She did. "You like me."
Her reply took a little longer to come, as if she was politely allowing the realization to down on her. "It's been obvious from the start, mon petit ange. I would do anything for you."
Her deep voice was so rich with emotion that it sent a shiver down Kam's spine. She mentally cursed herself for being so stupid, so painfully unobservant, "Anything?"
Another nod. "Anything."
"Kiss me."
Dame flinched, as if she'd been slapped across the face. It was a confusing reaction, one that filled Kam with anxiety for the seconds it took the other girl to speak again. "You don't know what you're asking, Kam. You can't possibly feel the same way as I do."
"My heart's been fluttering when I see you for two weeks now," she confessed in a higher voice, firm. She wanted to be heard, to make sure Dame understood . "I didn't know why before, it took me a little while but… I know now. And I know you like me enough not to condemn me into spending the rest of my life wanting you."
Dame smiled at her dramatic antics, which sent more funny twists into her stomach. If those were the butterflies people sang about, they felt fucking uncomfortable.
"Is this a dream?" The brunette asked her, her voice sounding breathless even though they had not done anything yet. She was smiling her adorably goofy smile, the one which was quick to end her usual intimidating aura. She had never looked more beautiful.
Kam chuckled with a shake of her head, then moved closer until she had replaced her own chair with Dame's lap, sitting comfortably on her thin legs. "You're so slow."
She had no time to say or do anything else, not when Dame's lips pressed against hers.
It was gentle at first, Kam's arms wrapping around her neck while Dame held her by the waist, the slight pressure she put on her fingertips making the blonde whine softly against her lips, which in consequence made the taller girl kiss her harder. She did not remember her legs following her arms and wrapping around Dame's middle, or how her tiny fingers ended up entangled with soft brown locks, ruining her ponytail, nonetheless she would never forget the long digits on her thighs, wonderfully burning her skin, pulling her closer until they were close to melting into one.
Dame was the one to break the kiss, gently pecking Kam's nose after she did it. "My heart has been fluttering when I see you for months. I win."
She laughed. "I thought there were no secrets between you, and you've been keeping this from me."
She was laying on Dame's chest, confident in her notion that none of her parents would be home for a few hours at least. She kissed her there, receiving a kiss on the forehead in retribution. "Trust me, I really wanted to talk to you about having feelings for someone. Except this someone was… also you."
They kissed again after that, and again, and again, until nothing else seemed remotely fun to do. Kam had kissed people before, all of them boys she had no real feelings for, none remotely comparable to the beauty of kissing Dame.
“Do you still want to go out for ice cream?” Dame whispered against her lips, making the two of them chuckle.
“Actually,” Kam started, still keeping their faces close. “I probably still have some ice cream in the freezer… so maybe we could stay here instead?”
don’t mind me, I just need to rant somewhere after that first episode of rpdr france.
spoilers ahead, you’re warned.
like...it’s not like I wasn’t aware of the first elimination but knowing what truly happened I’m???????? really French production, really? doing my girl Kahena like that??? she deserves the world and I hope people will see it and support her cause she truly is a gem. anyways. the way that lipsync was filmed truly showed something was wrong cause she killed it and it was weird not to have any shots on her?
also for some of the talent shows, I really have no clue how it’ll be translated in English? like Paloma’s??? it was SO funny to me but good luck to explain it.
and personal point of view: to me la grande dame deserved to be in the top? I loved what she did. also Elips and Kam’s runways were so good, Nicky looked amazing, and Jean-Paul Gaultier is still the most adorable person ever.
but anyways my main point was: Kahena will forever be one of my favorite queens ever and I hope the world will see how good and funny she is.
end of my rant, sorry about it.
(if you need some explanations about the episode/French slang or whatever, I’m right here).
Yesterday I was (lovingly) bullying someone into drawing Dame fanart and they asked me what photos of Dame I would want to see turned into art so I went to her instagram and I stumbled across this which I somehow had never seen before????
