Noxagt — Brutage (Drid Machine Records)
<a href="http://dridmachinerecords.bandcamp.com/album/noxagt-brutage" data-mce-href="http://dridmachinerecords.bandcamp.com/album/noxagt-brutage">NOXAGT: Brutage by Drid Machine</a>
Norway's Noxagt are a power trio in the purest sense of the term; however else their music has changed, or they have, they remain committed to figuring out just how heavy their particular kind of instrumental music can get. When they started releasing records that meant Kjetil Brandsdal’s bass and Jan Christian Kyvik’s drums were augmented by Nils Erga’s viola on 2003’s Turning it Down Since 2001 (the year Brandsdal began Noxagt as a solo project) and 2004’s The Iron Point; between those records and their last released through Load Records, 2006’s self-titled album, Erga and his very distinctive sound were replaced by Anders Hana on baritone guitar.
Out of all their records, that still commendable effort is the only one where the band didn’t quite seem to know how to go for the jugular; Erga’s sawing, blaring viola had been such a prominent part of what made Noxagt’s early work so great (especially the debut, maybe the best metal record made with strings as a part of the main band until recent SubRosa records) that switching to a more conventional set up resulted in something that felt a lot harder to pick out of a lineup.
The new album from Norwegian warmongers Noxagt is called Brutage is was released in March 2014 via Norwegian label Drid Machine. The newest release is promoted by the lenghtily-titled single, "Someone calls you every night but says nothing. You can’t sleep." tells a story through the title itself in a somewhat post-rock tradition, but what we get here instead of post-rock dynamics is truly noise rock dynamic, keeping in touch with the most bone-crushing moments of White Suns (especially "Footprints Filled") - a supermassive, deadly and utterly destructive death metal jam stuck in formaldehyde, sustained in incredible tension between tight rhythmical walls, and nothing is left there but move upward with levels of distortion and brutal bass interplay to create a sort of doom math, leaving no prisoners while relying ruthlessly loyal to the ever-ubiquitous rhythm of the atomic drums.

Kjetil Møster/Staer - split LP
This split LP is cool in so many ways. First; my great friend Kristoph plays in the fantastic Staer, a band that creates off the chain groovy noise jazz, in the vein of Noxagt and MoHa!. This is their first physical recording, limited to 200 copies, put out by Mozart Kebab, Action Jazz and Drid Machine Records (non other than Kjetil Brandsdal of Noxagt's own label). Second; it's one sided and clear. One side is screen printed by Kjetil, and the other side plays music two ways! The Kjetil Møster track plays from edge to middle, while the Staer track plays from label to middle. And off course, third; there are two damn juicy tracks hidden in those groves!
Stavanger (and Bergen) noise at its most brilliant!
