Maybe it was one of the first things he made, maybe it was just practice for other designs, all of which showed beauty and effort put into their making. But her eye kept drifting back. Focusing in on the little lump of a turtle. Slender fingers close around it for a moment. “You’re under selling yourself,” she murmurs, other hand reaching into a pocket and pulling out the requested bill. She didn’t carry cash most of the time but she brought enough to the market to indulge herself. She set it down on the table and pocketed the representation of her aumakua.  Her skin was the colour of some of the wood as she waved a pair of purple-glitter covered nails at some of the larger pieces. “Easily between sixty-and a hundred for each of these. Those smaller ones? Twenty five or t’irty.” She tilted her head and finally lifted leaf-green eyes to him. “But ya nevah worry about da money, do ya?”

Toni looked up from what she was working on when her obnoxiously loud music was abruptly shut off.  “Miss, Sergeant Barnes is requesting entry.”  Taking a deep, steadying breath she tried to focus on the title.  Sergeant Barnes was the person she had grown up idolizing, he was a person she could try to face.  Snowy road, single car.  Motorcycle careens into view.  “Sergeant Barnes?” 

Shaking off the images she looked over at the glass doors to the lab.  He was standing there, looking perfectly ordinary.  It wasn’t his fault. Hydra did it. The sound of choking filled her head.  “Come in.”  She rasped out, closing her eyes against the wave of nausea as she heard her mother die in the quiet of her whirling mind.  She didn’t know what to say to him.  How to feel about him.  It was all mixed up in the screaming agony of her grief.

600 followers holy christ

I’ve been coming and going a lot recently but this blog has still somehow kept itself just floating above 600 followers - and thank you all so much!

Given how inconsistent I’ve been over the years it means a whole lot that so many of you stayed and have continued to interact with me after so long, so I’m just going to give shoutouts to some of the people that have stuck with me (or certain threads) the longest and who I will always be grateful to for their patience.

If there is anyone I have left out I am so sorry - literally send me a message and I will make an entire post dedicated to how much I love you because I guarantee the omission was because my brain is a sieve and not because I don’t appreciate you

@piiemakcr​ - quite possibly the first person I ever interacted with on Tumblr back when they were John and Violet had no angsty backstory; I had no idea what I was doing (still don’t) and yet through blog changes and all of my little disappearances she has been an utter angel, OOC and IC. One of the best writers I’ve ever come across, on here or otherwise - I love you, and thank you so much!

@ofsollicitudo​ - the absolute angel that has put up with all the shit Violet has thrown at her Stiles and yet still somehow been interested enough in her to throw ideas around at 3 in the morning and make 473279569 AUs with me. You are so strong and wonderful, thank you!!

@dalphahale - on 2 accounts you have been one of my favourite writers to rp with and I’m consistently thankful to you for allowing my absences and continuing our threads! I don’t let you know often enough how much I appreciate your Derek but you deserve a shoutout after so long putting up with Violet (and my own inconsistency)

@theoreticalguardianangel​ - I’ve never even watched The Flash but I am in love with your Barry. Literally, I’m not even sure I want to watch it because I will be disappointed that you aren’t dictating what happens and because Violet can’t be in it to get in the way and inconvenience him. It means a lot that you’ve stuck with Violet and me so long, so thank you!

@drifting-anarchist​ - we have been interacting for absolutely ages with the same thread and somehow it has never ever got boring - even with my long absences we have managed to keep it up and keep it interesting and sweet and genuine and that takes skill, which I am giving you all the credit for! Your Bucky is wonderful, and thank you so much for giving Vi such a pure thread. I really hope we can develop their friendship more!

@stillprays​ - I am so glad you found me again because your Sam is an utter cutie that Violet does not deserve in the slightest (but that she will cling onto forever and ever) - I am in love with all the threads we have ever had and I’m grateful to you for helping me to expand my writing and my characterisation so much through them!

The Institute

Toni had been working with the Institute all her life.  Her father had been one of the leaders in development, had been among the first scientists to break through their understanding of how to create synths.  She had grown up at his knee, inventing and even designing her own robots.  While Howard hadn’t been the most attentive of fathers, the Institute itself was more than happy to assimilate the budding genius.  

Years later, and with a rebellious streak the size of a four-lane highway, Toni was the head of the courser division.  She had been removed from supervising the experiments with regular synthetics because she had shown her heart too freely, had objected to the way their creations were treated.  Now her contact with the machines was incredibly limited.  But Barnes was different.  He was an augmented human, her pet project.  She wanted to expand the institute’s purpose and help regular humans.  Barnes’ prosthesis was the first of its kind, and she had hoped to convince Father to allow her to work on more damaged humans.  

Sending out a signal on his coded frequency, she called him in for maintenance earlier than usual.  She had a few upgrades that she wanted to give him.

“Sam just put new Energizer batteries in my arm, always gives me the jitters,” James replied with a pleased little smirk, easily making light of the situation. “The doc has me on some new meds. It’s a stronger dose that we’re hoping takes this time. But it makes me fuckin’ vibrate for hours, and I hate it. I can’t sit still to save my life, and drinking is out of the question. You should have been here for the morning coffee mess.”

“I can imagine. You should see me on five days without sleep and eight shots of espresso.” The answer was clear-cut; there was nothing to worry about, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t try to make the situation less shitty. “If you’re already vibrating, want to join me for a few laps in the pool? I can try to beat my best time while trying to ignore the fact you’re doing six for each of mine.”
