Baffling to me that Drift and Rodimus in fandom are seen as Rodimus being very insecure and Drift more aloof when their canon dynamic is the exact opposite. Rodimus has many insecurities, but his friendship with Drift is not one of them. Meanwhile Drift is following him around like a lost little puppy begging for attention.

It's very difficult, nigh impossible, to find fics that accurately portray this.

I made transformers ocs like just when I was getting into the franchise and yknow what they say. Different test, same solution. Convergent evolution.

Which is to say I reinvented dratchet before even knowing that that was something that existed.

Two old bots. One who cares so much about the people around him that he’s become grumpy and mean about it. The other who has a history with the decepticons but is determined to become a better person. Passive aggressive back and forth because they don’t mesh that well at first. And it takes going on a little trip for the two of them to finally start making out sloppy style.

Also another random note but I also managed to (kind of, it’s more of a stretch) remake Driftrod between two completely different guys.

I ship Driftrod but not Dratchet, sorry chat. They just have better chemistry together throughout the IDW comic run imo. I don't hate anyone that does ship Dratchet, and I can't change that it is canon, even though I wish it wasn't.

Or, at the very least, that it wasn't just tossed in at the end. JRo's a good writer but the pairings in mtmte could've been handled better tbh.

I don’t mean to start the ship war all over again but I just can’t see driftrod. In fact, I have a hard time believing they’re even friends.

What I saw reading MTMTE was Rodimus being a shitty friend to Drift, selfish and exploitative. Rodimus insults and calls Drift names if he doesn’t answer him fast enough, Rodimus at no point thanks Drift for writing his buying the Lost Light (thereby making the quest possible) or for the Shannix so the crew can hangout on Hedonia. Rodimus, as Megatron(?) put it, uses Drift to clash with Magnus so Rodimus can do what he wants.

Drift told Rodimus NOT to bring Overlord on board but Rodimus did it anyway. When the truth comes out about Overlord, Rodimus doesn’t mention Drift, no “hey let’s find him and bring him back!” No he rather selfishly would rather let Drift stay in exile rather than apologize. (Interesting how in EoS, Drift doesn’t jump at the offer to return to the Lost Light)

‘Oh but Drift took the fall for him!’ Drift named only himself and the duobots, he didn’t just spare Rodimus from the blame but Chromedome and Brainstorm too. Also he did it because of his vision, that Rodimus was needed to save everyone. The quest, buying the Lost Light, taking the blame, Drift’s motivation is making sure that whatever’s coming, Rodimus will be there.

Let’s not forget Rodimus never actually apologized, Rodimus made it about himself, saying ‘he didn’t want Drift to hate him’. More like he didn’t want to deal with the consequences of his actions. (Don’t misunderstand, I enjoy Rodimus as a character but he’s a shitty friend and fully deserved that punch from Rewind).

Forget what ship is and isn’t canon, I would’ve loved to have seen Rodimus apologize and be an actual friend to Drift.

I’ve come to the conclusion that people don’t do dratchet because Ratchet isn’t conventionally attractive enough. To them he’s just an old man and Drift should be a twink with Rodimus. And they hate it when it’s brought up that Drift is the same age as Ratchet. Or that Rodimus was a terrible friend to Drift and never actually apologized to Drift.

...I wish there were more DriftRod fics that had Drift cheating and being broken up about it.
