Day 18/31. Drive
In my childhood "Drive" was one of the best action movies, and Mark Dacascos was one of the most popular actors.

I liked the part with the chainsaw.
Over the top late 90's buddy-style action, complete with a distractingly excessive score and an over-abundance of irreverent humour. Lots of genuinely great fight choreography that heavily utilised the environment, and a focus on martial artistry over gunplay that evoked a distinctly Hong Kong style. What was the obsession with dirt bikes smashing in through windows around this era?
Some pretty awful writing at times, but that was clearly not one of Drive's primary concerns. Brittany Murphy brought a ton of energy to the table, but it was misdirected into making a mildly amusing character quirky to the point of annoyance. The way she straddled an unconscious Mark Dacascos she'd barely even spoken to was downright creepy.
The final act was a mess both tonally and in terms of pacing. Masaya Kato came in looking and acting like Albert Wesker, even down to pulling off the sunglasses throw*. Interesting that by 1997 the cool good guy had to be dressed in black, so the villain was relegated to a tan jacket. I love that he removed it to show he was getting serious, revealing a smaller yet extremely similar looking second jacket underneath.
A little goofy and inconsistent, but generally good.
*Wesker caught his and put them back on though, and this guy had to have a backup pair hidden up his sleeve. Talk about amateur hour.
