Picked this up the other day when one of our local used bookstores opened back up. Excellent copy. Going through it I was surprised how much I'd read of his poetry, years back during my Dr Johnson kick. Not. A Great Poet, but he does have his sound and he can be surprisingly songful. #drjohnson #drsamueljohnson #poetry (at Franklin, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAImn46JGwV/?igshid=a29g87sn11yw
The Saracen's Head (or Sarry Heid as it is known) is a pub on the Gallowgate that is resonant because it is the place that Dr Johnson stayed in his one and only visit to Glasgow. Ignore the fact that the original 18th century pub was knocked down in 1905 and that the current one is on the other side of the street, and you can imagine that some of his spirit still lingers.
When Boswell and Johnson were in Glasgow admiring the elegant buildings, Boswell reminded him of the time in London when Adam Smith had boasted of the beauty of Glasgow to which Dr Johnson had replied, "Pray, sir, have you ever seen Brentford?"
Boswell's Life of Johnson is one of my favourite books because it is full of these irascible, terse remarks followed by expressions of tenderness. His contradictions are illuminating because they are nearer the surface.

We had a wonderful trip to Aachen, Germany. Stopping to look at the beautiful flowers around the city was my favorite part of the day. Here is one of my favorite shots.
