@Regranned from @markhymanmd You may already know how I feel about dairy: It’s nature’s perfect food — but only if you’re a CALF. We have NO biological requirement for this food, and yet, we’ve been told over and over again that dairy is a great source of calcium, milk makes healthy bones and we should drink it daily. I’m here to tell you that this is NOT true. Based on research and my experience practicing medicine, I typically advise most of my patients to avoid dairy products completely. Yet we are told by experts that we should consume 3 glasses of milk a day for health, and it should be low-fat or skim milk. Low fat milk is actually WORSE for you and has been shown to cause more weight gain than full fat milk in kids. Fat makes you full. Low fat milk leads to hunger and eating more. Milk is also inflammatory and contributes to autoimmune conditions, acne, allergies, and more. If you are going to have dairy, grass-fed is best. Most cows now have been bred to be the same and the type of casein, a protein found in milk, is super inflammatory. Goat’s milk has a different form of casein that is less inflammatory - a little goat milk or grass-fed butter or ghee which is clarified butter is fine. Also, stay away from yogurt. Most yogurt is filled with sugar and all kinds of additives and fillers. If you’re going to have yogurt, make sure the ingredients are super minimal, or just make it yourself! In my new book, "Food: What the Heck Should I Eat," I break down 12 categories of food, deep-dive into the science as well as environmental and ethical guidelines behind those categories, and provide practical tools to sum up what I’ve found to determine what you should eat and avoid.
