How do you play dropped C and below tunings? I just don't understand how to make it sound good because when I try to it sounds wonky

Basically, the guitar is regularly tuned to E standard, or EADGBe (from low to high). Any altered tuning is a result of lowering the pitches of the strings in a specific way for different reasons. Slide guitar players use open tunings to make it easier to play chords because you’re basically tuning the open strings to make a chord (whichever chord it may be). Drop tunings, like Drop D, change the pitch of (usually) one string, so that the bottom (thicker) 3 strings make a power chord, making it easier to make power chords. This is typical for most heavier music like metal. Pretty much, the only reason (although not always) for a drop tuning is for the easy power chords, but its a matter of how you use the tunings. When you change tunings, everything that you've learned about scale and chord shapes gets thrown out the window. Its a matter of messing around with it enough to find chords and patterns that sound good to you. I’m not a master at drop tunings, so you could probably find some good tutorials on youtube. Now, if thats not the issue, then maybe the guitar isn’t tuned correctly, but it could be either one. You could find a list of different tunings on the internet (if you haven’t looked already, which i assume you have), but yeah, just go nuts and mess around with the tuning a lot, and I’m sure you’ll come up with some cool stuff! Drop Tunings - My Thoughts

I know I should be comfortable in playing with different tunings besides standard, but. I just. Drop tunings just don't do it for me. Like, Drop C for example. I'd rather play in C standard. I understand that for guitar players, it's easier to do bar chords, chug, shred, whatevs, but I like to move, I like to walk, I like to make scales happen. I know I can do it for drop tunings, but, I just. I don't like it. Not fun. D: Anyone else feel this way? Talk to me, bass players of Tumblr.

But, for tunings like D standard and C standard, I can dig. Because walk. And stuff.

I used to be in a band that played in Drop C. Followed the guitar players the whole time. Didn't bother me.

My band is covering Slither by Velvet Revolver. In Drop D#. Also doesn't bother me too much.

Trying to WRITE in Drop D#, or even just Drop D, however, bothers me because not smooth for me.
