Today's Innovative Invention: The Drumbrella
Nothing cheers up a rainy day like some upbeat music. Most people would opt to plug in some earbuds and listen to actual music as they’re going about their daily activities, but the Drumbrella (or “Rain Drum“) takes a different approach: it uses the raindrops themselves to produce unique sounds as the user walks through the downpour.
Each segment of the musical umbrella is covered with a taut waxed cloth; the different tension levels and sizes of each mean that a distinct sound is produced by every part of the umbrella. According to designer Dong Min Park, the segments all correspond to a specific part of a standard drum kit.
