I have a stupid little theory about Deadman and BBs!
(I completely forgot how tumblr works and I hope that I’m posting this right lol)
First of all, I'm not a native english speaker, I'm sorry if I write something that ends up getting confused. Trying my best here.
PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THERE ARE MASSIVE SPOILERS HERE, if you haven't finished Death Stranding, don't read this!
Hello! So I have a theory that I would like to share here, I don't know if this makes sense, if I didn't get the point, or if there's something that I can't quite remember on the game that completely debunks that theory. I don't even know if someone already came up with it, if someone did, I'm so sorry.
I've been thinking about Deadman's past a lot and to be honest, I don't think we know much about him at all, I mean, he explains that he was created from pluripotent stem cells, but then, after the end game, he sends us an interview saying that he lied about it and that actually he was fertilized naturally, but was carried by an artificial womb. Alright, so far so good, but why exactly was he created? Who created him? He doesn't seem to have an emotional connection to anyone in his life before Sam and Lou, so I don't think that the reason he was created was because someone wanted to have a baby.
So, I thought, is there any possibility that he was part of an experiment (maybe from Bridges, maybe not) where they tried to create artificial BBs as a substitute to the regular BBs? I mean, it's not that hard to see Bridges trying that. We know that BBs are precious hardware, Deadman himself said that, and we know that a BB needs to be created in a very specific condition, a fetus took from a brain-dead mother that will be used as a stillmother. In retrospect, BBs don't grow on trees. Another factor is the emotional connection between BBs and their families, using these artificial BBs that don't have families and any connection to anyone, would avoid incidents like the one with Clifford and Sam.
However, there was a massive detail that made the whole experiment ending up failing, Deadman said that he "came into this world disconnected", what if the condition where these aritificial BBs were created, on an artificial womb instead of an actual womb, would ending up creating babies completely disconnected from the beach, like what happened to Deadman, because that's the reason he gave us for not having a beach. If these babies don't have beaches, then there's no connection to the other side, therefore, they're useless for BT detection or a network key.
But still, there is a lot of questions, wouldn't Bridges know that these artificial BBs wouldn't work because they don't have stillmothers on the first place? I mean, I can see Bridges not knowing about the artificial womb thing, especially at the beginning of the whole experiment with BBs, but a stillmother is a essential condition for a BB to exist and they knew that since the experiments conducted in Manhattan. If I'm not recalling it wrong, Deadman said that a single stillmother can be connected to more than one baby using the pod and an incubator, maybe they would try to use that same method with the artificial BBs, I don't know.
There's another question, if Deadman in fact was one of these BBs, then why would they keep him after the experiment failed? And that raises another problem with the very few things we know about Deadman, we don't know exactly when or why his organs had to be transplanted. He said on the interview "Any organs that were absent or lacking I got from someone else", when? When he was a baby? through the course of his life? When he said that some organs were absent, I guess these were transplanted when he was a baby, but the lacking ones could very well be transplanted when he was already an adult. So if Deadman has a bad health quality because of the way he was created, can we assume that the other artificial BBs' health were just the same? What if he was the only one that actually survived through the experiment and that's why they kept him, maybe out of pity or because it wouldn't be all the hard work for nothing. I guess someone helped to raise him, I mean, how can a person like Deadman, that doesn't have parents, a family, friends, got to be doctor at Bridges without anyone's help? Okay, I'm getting too far gone now.
To be honest, I don't really know what to think, this idea has been on the back of my head for a long time and I wanted to let it out and share with you guys. I'm very excited with the Director's cut, especially the new story bits, maybe we're going to know more about BBs (I guess this is kind of confirmed on the trailer). I really hope that they add more details to Deadman's story.
