Gabby DaRienzo

DSCRBD Vol 5 Ch 2

We met up with Gabby DaRienzo an early Saturday morning at Bento Miso — a collaborative workspace for artists, designers and alike. This is not unusual for Gabby to be working weekends, in fact this is now part of her routine, "but that's a good thing", she says, "I wouldn't want it any other way". 

You see Gabby has been hard at work, taking part in many projects, but more notably co-founding @laundrybear with her partner. What started out as part necessity and part fascination has now culminated into the start of a refreshing game development venture. Gabby, a self taught game-designer, learned of her obsession at a young age.

Having grown up around gaming myself, it's amazing to hear Gabby talk about how different things are now in this realm. She talks passionately about where she hopes and envisions it to be. For one she wants the community to become a more diverse one, and she is actioning this by being a leader in different groups and speaking at various events, "when you have a non-diverse group making and playing games, you're missing out on so many different perspectives". It's quite amazing to see someone thrive so well in their atmosphere and take pride in what they do.

Ekow Nimako

DSCRBD Vol 5 Ch 1

If this artist looks familiar, it's most likely because you heard about him at last year's Nuit Blanche, having one had one of the more celebrated exhibits in Toronto, 'Silent Knight'. If he doesn't, take note, presenting Ekow Nimako; visual artist, musician, actor, writer, but most notably one badass LEGO artist. LEGO, a staple for most of us growing up, stuck with Ekow his whole life. 

His affinity with the building blocks was so strong he started incorporating LEGO exclusively into his professional practice back in 2012, "working with LEGO became something that was a no-brainer because I had all this experience with the material". We got into talking about why nostalgia itself fuels many artists and how it generates creativity: "When you're young and creating, your mind is truly free. Reaching back to that time is the closest we can get to intrinsic creative play".

Ekow is the type of guy you can get lost in a conversation with, he's humble yet honest. Many of his pieces bare social-political messages, something of value and that is implied with confidence. "Artists have obligations; many artists may not attest to that, but it's true we do have obligations to the people. Art is activism, art is politics, art is instrumental to human life". It's the confidence that I always find admirable in artists being in such a subjective field.
