Hi, I'm a big fan of your blog and I just got assigned a research paper on Ancient Rome. The topic I'm doing is homosexuality (I have yet to narrow it, but that's the general direction I'm going), and although I know you're more of a Greece girl, I was wondering if you could point me towards any good books for research? Thanks =)
I’ve actually done a lot of work on ancient Rome with regards to sexuality. I had more opportunity to write exclusively about sexuality in my Roman history courses than I did in my Greek ones, actually.
First off! Don’t use the term homosexuality in your paper— I can’t stress this enough. Stick with same-sex relations or same-sex attraction when you’re talking about people in the past, prior to 1869 when the term homosexuality was coined. The word carries a lot of weight and history in and of itself, and to apply that to the ancients who didn’t have that term is not so good (a lot of historians still do it, but it is irksome to a lot of others— including myself. Sticking with same-sex when referencing to this stuff is just the safe way to go).
When it comes to narrowing it down, you’ve got a lot of history to work with. Either narrow it down to a particular topic within sexuality, or a time period. For instance, I did a paper on Augustus’ moral reform, mostly drawing from the late Republic and the early Empire. I also did a paper on how same-sex relations and masculinity were perceived by the greater Roman community, rather than just by the elite. So try and find some place you can squish yourself into, otherwise your paper is gonna be massive.
I’d start out reading through Marilyn B. Skinner’s book called ‘Sexuality in Greek and Roman Culture’, and Craig A. William’s ‘Roman Homosexuality’ (I know he uses the term homosexuality— it irks me, but his book is insanely good). You should be able to find those at your local library, or your university’s library. If you can get a hold of ‘Homosexuality in Greece and Rome: A Sourcebook’ that is also really good— it’ll help you with your primary sources, as it’s just a collection of translated primary sources (I usually ignore the footnotes, but that is up to you).
Start with those. Flip through their bibliographies to find other sources. Check your university’s journals— Jstor is a good place to go first, but a general search on the library website should help. Pick a topic within the umbrella of same-sex relations first, though. It’ll save you a lot of reading and note taking that you end up not needing in the end.

Hey guys!
I just wanted to thank all of you for being so supportive of this new blog I've been doing. I know there are about 3 or 4 really popular Percy Jackson headcannon blogs out there, so I'm really glad that this one wasn't shunned or ignored. It's only been open for about a day and a half and the follower count just keeps climbing. I made a little goal to myself that after every follower, I'd post 5 new scenarios... and well I'm about 375 scenarios behind. Yeah, the Wayland symbol is a horseshoe, cause they were blacksmiths. My guess for the rings is that they're magical/runed somehow so they shrink/grow to fit the wearer's finger.
Yeah, I thought so because of Wayland the Smith oh yeah maybe for the magical thing idk though they say they don't deal in magic :/ and there aren't any other runes that shrink/enlarge the size of things :/
but it's moot anyway -- basically, the whole ring thing doesn't make sense.
