*DISCLAIMER* Please note, as not much has been released yet on Leona’s past/family relationships that this is purely my own thoughts and ideas that I’ve put together using research from The Lion King, and its many other stories in reference to Scar and the original Pride family. For generations, the second born has always been the leader of the THE LION GUARD. A team of animals whose duty is to protect the Pride Lands and the Circle of Life. However, another reason why the second-born child of the Lion King is the leader of the Lion Guard is because they possess the Roar of the Elders; an intensely powerful roar that is bestowed on them by the Great Lions of the Past.
Like Scar, and those before him, Leona too inherited the roar. When Scar had the roar, it was lost to him after he grew corrupted and attempted to use the roar for evil. Leona had been warned about this and took it upon himself to take it a step further. He wanted to harness the full power of the roar by gaining control of the elders, and that is exactly what he did.
To do this, Leona had to conjure up a lot of dark magic to perform the ritual. Of course, his older brother ( and future King ) caught wind of Leona’s plan to taint the Roar of the Elders and attempted to stop him. A fight broke out between them in the middle of the ritual where Leona would receive the scar over his left eye. Furious, Leona quickly subdues his brother using a spell before he continues the ritual and harvests the power of every king of the past into his staff, giving him a tremendous amount of energy and making his roar lethal. Because the leader of the lion guard usually has mark of a lion head on their left shoulder, it was removed from Leona. To replace the mark, Leona gets a lion tattoo on his arm to symbolize his control over the roar completely as his tattoo cannot be removed.
𝐅𝐀𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐘 / 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏𝐒
Leona doesn’t have much respect for his father, as he always seen and put in his older brother’s shadow, causing a bitterness for the two to grow inside him. When Leona had altered and tainted the Lion Roar, their relationship grew more estranged and Leona became known as a disgrace to the family in the eyes of their father. However, his relationship with his mother is not as strained. True, she wishes to see him do better, and disapproves of the path he is beginning to lead, but she has never turned him away. Because of this, there is a much softer side to Leona that exists primarily because of his mother’s love for him.
I won’t go to deep into his brother and his relationship because I plan on making that a separate post.
𝐏𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐑𝐒 / 𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐒
DARK MAGIC- Leona is well versified in this area of magic, and with the staff he harness high levels of it, making him a very powerful and dangerous opponent.
ROAR OF THE ELDERS- When the leader of the Lion Guard uses the Roar of the Elders, deceased lions roar along with him/her, instilling real power in their Roar. With this roar, it has flattened plains, held floods back and torn down rock-slides. In The Lion Guard, it is revealed that the Roar is so powerful that it can kill the user's opponent(s); as Scar destroyed the previous Lion Guard when he used the power of the Roar.
SPIRITUAL SUMMONING- When used out of anger, the Roar is capable of summoning the evil lion spirits from their afterlife, After evil spirits are summoned, they are capable of acting on their own accord, not needing to be called on by the user. The same goes for good spirits.
ATMOKINESIS- it is revealed that the Roar can create a whirlwind to lift objects from the ground.
ELECTROGENESIS- it has also been shown the roar and its magic can be used to summon lightening to hit and attack targets.
