100 YEARS YOUNG! || Last week #NMACDST had the pleasure of visiting one of our charter members, Velma Canon, to celebrate her 100th birthday. It is always an honor to sit in her company. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO NMACDST’s own VELMA CANON!!! *** A few years ago we featured Ms. Canon. We’re reposting that text because her 100th trip around the sun is all the reason we need: “#FridayFeature celebrating #NMAC35 - charter member Velma Canon: Velma Canon is a charter member of the North Manhattan Alumnae Chapter where she served as Treasurer for nine years, chaired the Audit Committee for ten years, chaired the Fundraising Committee and is a part of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated’s Legacy of Firsts. After graduating from Hampton Institute(now Hampton University) in 1941 with a B.S. in Business Ms. Canon had many opportunities for employment. She worked for the Dean of Knoxville College, an adoption agency and even an African Prince. In 1951 she went to the Urban League and applied for the position of stenographer at the New York Times. She got the job at the place which would become her life’s work.
