Forgive the way they don’t fit together. I wanted detail, so I drew them each on an entire page in my sketchbook, which is about half the size of a composition notebook. If it were to be printed, I would put the first panel across the top of a page, with the second two next to each other below that, and the final panel would be on the next page.
This place [Colbourn Hall - which I totally spelled wrong in the drawing, but it’s a really long process for me to get these photos onto this website so if you could just ignore it, that’d be great] is a beehive of hallways and offices. I walked around and through it three times before I figured it out. I actually took about a dozen photos, including some outside which I would have used for the opening panel as like a magical trail to this mystical place of Professor Offices, because that what they looked like, but then I decided I wanted to work on my ‘indoor backgrounds.’
I can actually remember the day in elementary art class where we learned how to make it look like a road trailed off over the horizon, and I remember being VERY frustrated when I couldn’t make it look the way I wanted it to. I didn’t master it here, but I think you can tell as I draw the panels [they weren’t drawn in the order they are depicted, I changed them around a couple times before my final decision] that I got a little better at it each time. Just a little though. There are imperfections that my untrained eye caught once they were up on the screen, but they are better than i expected them to be.
I actually skipped into the kitchen after finishing the 2nd panel to show it to my hubby saying “LOOK IT LOOKS LIKE AN ACTUAL HALLWAY” and he agreed, which he wouldn’t have done if it didn’t really look like a hallway.
I think someone looking at this spread would feel exactly what I felt in this hallway of hallways: confusion, panic, and then relief upon finding the hall I needed, with the specific room being the very first, so I didn’t have to continue going down hallways....
The scale is a little off in a few places, but I tried REALLY hard to get that down, it’s like the key aspect of ‘hallway drawing’... mostly the doors fucked me up.
As far as strategies..... ALWAYS HAVE A STRAIGHTEDGE HANDY. I have created one out of a folded notecard. I have a protractor somewhere but who needs actual tools when you can just fold things until they are useful?! Not me.
