I went to a school that had a lot of white people. At one point I got my hands on a white pen, and started drawing all over my hand and arm with it. It was absolutely beautiful, contrasting with my skin, and I was the only one who could do it, because my white friend's skin was too pale!!

hello! I saw your post about your essay "jazz in peace", and am wondering if there is somewhere I can read it, or find out more about the images you included in the post (the "intercourse machines"). I am curious about these machines and their design :) thank you!

Alas, I haven't really written anything about them, I just wish I had! The images in that post were from the 1997 compilation Tijuana Bibles: Art and Wit in America's Forbidden Funnies, 1930s-1950s, both from the section on the booklet "When Mother Was A Girl", attributed to the anonymous artist Mr. Prolific, and the booklet "Bellyhoo", which may or may not be a Mr. Prolific joint also. (There's clearly commonalities between both images, but the book doesn't give enough context to unpack why that is.) Both depictions of a fucking machine in this book are really interesting to me because it's so different in tenor from the 21st century depictions I'm used to -- both in the mechanical technologies showcased (the big dials that control, I guess, speed???) and the jokey advertising framing. The book's commentary describes the fucking machine concept as having been "drawn thousands of times, in thousands of forms -- it simply never quits as a conceptual concern" but even if they're exaggerating for effect, I want to see the other depictions in the archive! I'm going to do some digging into other academic writing on early 20th century porn comics and see what I can find, and I apologize for getting your hopes up.
