Neybuu drops a guest mix for our dublab.es radio show and talks us through her unique style of live looping tabla with Octatrack
Rewind two years to where I first saw Neybuu play live alongside Barcelona bass music stalwart Iberian Juke at local rave haunt Garage442. I remember thinking “what has she got up there?” A tabla linked to a synth and a drum machine of course. Neybuu’s sets are an energetic mix of vocals, synths, beats, tabla, and effects, all of which she loops live. I became quite fascinated with her ideas about making music and two years on, finally got to ask some questions about her live set, what’s coming up in 2019 plus a meaty selection of tracks for the Misdigest radio show on dublab.es
Neybuu spent 10 years studying classical tabla in India under Pandit Ishwar Lal Mishra, who toured the world with Ravi Shankar. Upon returning to the states, she shifted focus to music production and has been using live hardware to create tabla-infused dance music ever since.
“I customise the tabla by installing condenser mics inside the drums and drill holes in the body for the mic cables, or xlr ports. I have the mic signals run through a 500 rack, which includes MA5 preamps and DocDerr EQ/Compressors (one for each drum). I do all of that so I can get the best, most dynamic, pure sounds from the tabla without any feedback at club-level volumes.
I use an Elektron Octatrack as my main brain, an Elektron Analog Rytm as my main drum machine, Elektron Analog Four as my main synthesizer and Elektron Analog Heat for distortion effects. I also use a TC Helicon Voicelive Touch 2 for my vocals.”
“The mix I made for y’all is a collection of songs that are really moving me at the moment. I put a few classics in there, like the tune by Deekline and Ed Solo, "Gimme". And I've added some new tracks that are inspiring me right now, like one of UK-based IZCO's latest track, "Tek 5". I've included one of my all-time favorite tracks called "Available" by Nigerian artist, Patoranking. There's also my latest remix of Cardi B's track, "Money" up in there. I love the combination of slower, sexier tracks, mixed with faster beats like UK garage and footwork. I think it gives people a bit of a break from the fast moving stuff, so they can kinda slow down n get down and dirty on the dance floor.”

“I have a lot of upcoming things this year. I've just been on Beem's album release tour in Pacific Northwest alongside the incredibly talented Kvadratvåg from Sweden. I am also finishing up an online course that focuses on teaching the ins and outs of each of the Elektron machines, which are the hardware boxes I use for music production. It should be ready in a couple of months. My new single is out! You can listen to it in full on my bandcamp page https://neybuu.bandcamp.com. Hope you dig! If so, feel free to share and support.”
