I, a bassoonist, went down the rabbit hole of double reed instruments on wikipedia, and will be rating them out of ten mostly based on looks
a regular bassoon 9/10. i love it very much but there is room for improvement
okay, next up, the tenoroon, which receives the award for dumbest sounding instrument ever 4/10 would be less but it looks kind of cool. lost a lot of points on the name
also, the contrabassoon, something i wish i could play so much. it looks so cool 10/10 no notes
next, the dulcian. I used to think this was cool, until i tried making this post and then every single picture i put in here turned into a blurry upclose shot of a dulcian and i almost went insane. it looks like it'd be fun to play though. its so small. 6/10 lost a lot of marks due to its trying to be every picture
Oh! and let us not forget semi contra, an instrument i only learned about today. it looks so interesting and why is it metal??? 8/10 it seems like it is trying to betray the woodwinds and join the enemy (brass and saxophones)
Alas! my friends, my foray into wikipedia did not end there. I ventured to explore variants of the oboe (the worse of the two best known double reeds).
again, a normal oboe for reference 6/10 is kind of shrill and too hard to play. pretty good in the hands of an expert just not my type
i also found the piccolo oboe, but that looks exactly the same, save smaller, and so i will decline to include a picture
next i saw the english horn. half decent. looks cool. it gets an 7/10 one more point than oboe simply because itslike an oboe but trying to be a bassoon and in my book you get points for trying
after that came the oboe of love. (why it is called that? i dont know but i find it hilarious) pretty much the same as a regular oboe again 7/10 its just an oboe but with a better name
next another instrument i had never heard of the oboe da caccia. its like if an oboe and a french horn had a baby so its like an oboe but worse 5/10 (remember kids, brass are the enemy)
and last but not least, bass oboe. 8/10 only oboe i would play
note: i i offended brass players, oboeists, or saxophonists in this post, then i have acheived my goal
