I think the Edgar Allan Ravens is such a cool allusion to Edgar Allan Poe and his works, and I like how castle evermore is a reference to his poem “the raven”. Fun fact the narrator says “evermore” once but the Raven only says “nevermore”, the exy team probably uses “evermore” cause it suggests that they will always stay standing as a team and it works as great irony.
The obvious reason Poe is used is that he is one of the famous Gothic writers, so he already has that dark and spooky vibe going on. However, something specific to Poe is that he essentially brought the Gothic genre to America. In the same way he was one of the founding fathers of American literature, the Ravens are one of the first major exy teams. Poe was also very concerned over how his works would be perceived, which is reflected in how the Ravens are very concerned over their image. Poe was also big into having beautiful characters, I think we see this in how Riko and Kevin are the face of the Ravens, and Kevin at least seems to be aware of the physical image he presents to the media.
Also something I find cool is that castle evermore itself reflects a lot of the elements within Poe’s works. In Poe’s story “house of usher” we see a young man travel to a strange mansion where he slowly becomes fearful of the environment around and inside the home. I think we see this when Neil goes to castle evermore. Another recurring theme is Poe’s works is premature burial; I don’t think its a coincidence that the nest’s dorm rooms are located underneath the court, so the ravens are always trapped in a dark enclosed space underground without any sunlight.
Something that could be a reach but is also interesting to me is Allison and Seth possibly being a reference. Poe wrote a lot of men mourning over beautiful women, and he also wrote murder mysteries. I think it’s possible this is flipped into Allison (a beautiful woman) mourning over seth, as Neil contemplated the reasoning for his death as a mystery.
Also something that is not specific to Poe is the Gothic double, but it is frequently featured in his works. Kevin and Riko are doubles, meaning they cannot exist together, and explains why one seeks to destroy the other. I would say Jean and Neil are also doubles since their early life circumstances would have made them into essentially the same person, but their individual experiences have made them opposites.
This is all I can think of rn but I’m sure there’s more whether it’s intentional or not.
Manhwa Characters as KDA Part 4
Now one of my most favorite villainesses/reincarnations! To be honest, it was hard to match Kai’Sa to anyone because there many villainesses/characters who can match her elegance and battle prowess. Then I remembered:
Kai’Sa - Melissa Podebrat (Foddebrat) (Beware of the Villainess!)
After waking up in Korea, Melissa Podebrat (Foddebrat) finds herself in a strange new world. Well, not really,... as Melissa lived in Korea in her previous life. Now living as an idol in previous home, Melissa is free to do what she wants and no one can stop her from kicking a$$ on everybody’s tv screens.
Sup buttholes, dont mind me.
