I've written a fair number of Dumpster Bin entries already, I just didn't label them as such. There's Roger McGuinn's sea sick shanty record, Graham Nash's wasted opportunity, Steve Cropper's time spent on the crapper and a whole bunch of entries about Stephen Stills.

Indeed, if you're new to the Dollar Bin, please be warned that I complain about Stephen Stills a lot. I curse him. I mock him. I get a little tipsy and ramble about his lingering penchant for eating paste.

But Stills' 1978 check-me-out-I'm-a-studly-pro-horse-jockey-as-well-as-an-ace-rock-star record Thoroughfare Gap takes the - very nasty - cake when it comes to why Stephen Stills Sucks. Please, join me, while I crack open a succession of cold ones and tell you all about it.

Let's begin by addressing Stills' horse riding claims on the cover. When I was 12 I got myself a pair of red, white and blue biking gloves to compliment my new red, white and blue ten speed bike. I hoped the gloves would quickly transform me into an Olympian cyclist and that, by being an Olympian cyclist, I would quickly find myself welcomed into the arms of Amy Lambertson, the love of my pre-pubescent life, who, poor girl, knew that at every school dance, when You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Party gave inevitable way to Take My Breath Away, I'd show up at her side and beg to dance with her.

That experience inspires the following missive:

Those biking gloves did not work: I never did wind up an Olympian cyclist and so I never wound up in the arms of Amy Lambertson. So drop the dumb jockey act already. Jockeys are nimble and light. You are torpid and dull. And no photograph of you on a horse is gonna fool any of us.

But Stills won't listen: Thoroughfare Gap also finds him claiming to be a polyglot when, in reality, he doesn't know smack and struggles with plain old English. Woman Lleva finds him flirting with us and chanting "woman, woman, woman, woman" in horrific Spanglish and then, on Beaucoup Yumbo, he backs up the truck and drops a load of his horse's steamy shite all over English and Cajun French as well. Consider the following couplet:

She treats me nice and she makes good gumbo

C'est ma femme oui Je t'aime I love her so: c'est beaucoup yumbo.

I plugged this into Google translate just to make sure I'm not slandering Stills. And guess what? I'm not.

If you think "she treats me nice and makes good gumbo; she's my wife, yes I love you; It's very yumbo" makes for good grammar or poetry in any tongue say the word and I will issue Stills an apology.

Check that: no I won't. Rather, I'll recommend you reconsider your citizenship here in the Dollar Bin. In the meantime I rest my case.

Stills is just generally the kinda guy who sneaks into your swanky suite at the White Lotus to crap in your suitcase. Only no one feels sorry for him when he falls off the wagon. After all, Stills doesn't have a wagon, he's got a horse. And he lists himself as responsible for the horns and strings on every of Thoroughfare Gap's tracks. Really? I can believe that he did a bunch of cocaine then shouted incoherently at an uncredited, bemused and terrified cohort of professional sessions musicians throughout the making of this record but I dare anyone, including Stills himself, to claim that he actually played all the oboes, sousaphones, piccolos and celli contained in this howling dumpster fire of a record.

What's more, Stills once again brought in Joe Freakin' Lala to play alongside those pros. Lala does his signature thing - repeatedly dumping his filled-to-the-brim junk drawer of beats - all over Thoroughfare Gap. Had Paul Simon invited Lala to the Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme sessions Joe would have recommended busy bongos for the track.

I loathe Joe Freakin' Lala.

And Lala isn't the only flimsy Dollar Bin villain who takes part here. Guess who else shows up? You guessed it. Danny "Check Out My Ding Dong" Kortchmar co-writes, co-sings. and co-pulverizes us on Can't Get No Booty, a Stones' rip off that our president is likely singing to himself in the shower as we speak:

All of this would be a lot less infuriating if Stills wasn't a perfectly capable songwriter and musician. No one can get mad at me for being a dope: I am a dope. I can't help it. But Stills could have made worthwhile music. After all just listen to the record's title track:

Are the vocals both dull and weirdly processed? Yes. Is the song way too long and the fiddle within it buried in BS? Yes. But this song is not awful; it's actually okay.

But you know what's not okay? Me! I just dedicated an hour to Stephen Stills. Clearly, I, like Steve, can't get no booty...
