Military Exhibit at the Saldanha Suites
There is a nice little gallery here at Fort Dunree which is separate from the main museum of Fort Dunree. I entered the place primarily because the wind was strong outside and I was just hiding from it. It glad that it turned out to be quite interesting. There were paintings on display here, some of them even had price tags on them. I supposed there were made by local artists. There is also a section which exhibits the local wildlife found in Inishowen which I thought was quite interesting. Of course, no gallery or museum at Fort Dunree would be complete without one about the military.

Wildlife Exhibit at the Saldanha Suite
What I thought used to be a cafe has now turned into a museum or gallery. The Saldanha suite is one of the structures here at Fort Dunree and it gives more focus on the local aspects of this place. One part of the exhibitions here showcases the wildlife of Inishowen. I immediately noticed the presence of several types of stuffed birds here. I'm not an expert on birds but I thought these birds were magnificent. I know it is very hard to see these birds what with them flying all around. Perhaps the most recognizable bird for me here is the seagull, which are plentiful here.

Saldanha Suite
Fort Dunree is one of those places which can be polarizing. I'm not really huge on military stuff but this kind of thing can be interesting to other people. One of the points of interest here at Fort Dunree is the museum which is at the fort itself. I have been here at the fort a few times and I have never entered the fort itself. I have always only looked at it from the outside. As it turns out, it isn't the only museum here. There is a place call the Saldanha Suite which is very museum like. This built on the building next to the fort. I could have sworn that this place used to be a cafe but it seemed like they turned it into a museum.

Danny McLaughlin Viewing Area
I was happy with my visit to Fort Dunree. Although it wasn't my first time to visit the place, this time around, I discovered that there was this whole other half of Fort Dunree that I never knew about. There are trails to visit various parts of the fort complex as well as see the outstanding scenery that Fort Dunree has surrounded itself with. I decide to head a little closer to the fort as there is yet another trail here. The trail brings you close to the lighthouse here are Fort Dunree. I was surprised to know that there is a lighthouse here as it wasn't obvious to me that there was one here.

Practice Battery at Fort Dunree
The mountain trail at Fort Dunree was surprising that it showed me the existence of a secluded beach which is right next to the mountain where the fort was built. I don't know if this was intentional since I would imagine that soldiers might also want to relax every now and then in a secluded beach right next to their place of work. While the trail provided insights into the setup of the Top Fort of Fort Dunree, it also gives great views of the surrounding area. The trail primarily weaves across the face of the mountain facing the sea. Again this makes sense because the main threats here would all be coming from the sea.

A Glimpse of Dunree Bay from the Top Fort
I was pleasantly surprised that there was another part of Fort Dunree that I didn't know of. I don't know if the trail has always been open and that I never noticed it but it seems to be open now and I was very excited to give ia a try. I took the mountain path which brings visitors to the top of the mountain which happens to host another fort called the Top Fort. While the Top Fort is still here for historical reasons, it also provides great views of the surrounding area. It seems that no matter where you choose to set up a fort you end up picking a place which is gorgeous. This seems to have happened to Fort Dunree, which also happens to be a place of great natural beauty.
