About seven months ago I started looking for a second cat, because my cat was lonely and wanted a friend. For most people this is a pretty straight-forward task: go to the shelter, find a cat, adopt it. However, my cat has food allergies, so I decided that the new cat should also have allergies, since they would be eating the hypoallergenic food anyway, and because it’s so hard for special needs cats to get adopted.
After about a month of waiting for a cat with food allergies to turn up at my local shelter I decided to take my search online. That’s when I discovered the DunRoamin’ Stray and Rescue in New Brunswick. Long story short, they are an amazing non-profit rescue group that takes in animals with medical conditions. Often these are the kinds of medical issues that could result in euthanasia in mainstream animal shelters. These could be short-term, like injuries sustain from being hit by a car, or long-term chronic conditions like epilepsy or even FIV. Some of their animals have been in their care for years while they wait for a forever home. This is where I found my second cat. He had been at the rescue for 1.5 years waiting to be adopted. There are other cats that have been waiting for over 3 years to be adopted. They do not give up on any animal.
If you’re looking for a new furry friend, consider getting a special needs animal. And if you’re in the vicinity, check out the DunRoamin’ Stray Rescue.
