Ok, I just love the scene when Piper tells Healy where to take his weird lesbian obsessions. I seriously chuckled. I love that whole episode. What’s your favourite episode of Season 1?

I’m seriously torn between 1x08 and 1x09, in which Piper dropped the whole Nice Blonde Lady facade and told Healy off lol. Oh, and that ep also had this:

I have to say that, after watching Season 3 and all the s*#t that went down, I completely appreciate Season 4 even more. Sometimes you have to experience the darkest moments to get into the light again, and Piper’s development and awareness of power tripping, losing Alex, and basically losing herself was a hallmark of Season 4.

Definitely! Piper’s character development in s4 was massive and /necessary/, both for her as a person, and for her relationship with Alex.... and Taylor did a great job showing that development.

I have another question for you. So, in Season One, there is a scene with Alex and Pennsatucky in the laundry room (Episode 7). I’ve always struggled with this scene because it strikes me as a threat of rape. And when we learn more about Pennsatucky, we discover that she was raped. How do you feel about this scene?

Well, I think Alex had had it up to here with “Tucky” bad-mouthing Piper and she drew the first (verbal) weapon that she thought would do the job quickly and effectively---the threat of sexual violence (knowing that Tucky was a homophobe). Alex isn't a violent person, so I wouldn't have expected her to resort to purely physical violence...or even the threat of it. I think she just said what she thought would work, without much thought about it. Knowing what I know now about Tucky’s past, re-watching it makes me feel badly for Tucky but (and I’m being 100% honest here) the first time I watched it, (a) I laughed at Tucky’s obvious discomfort because she was pissing me off majorly, too and (b) I was completely mesmerized by Alex’s power over her. She towers over Tucky and her line delivery...wow. Knowing that Tucky tried to kill Piper a few episodes later makes me feel less sympathetic towards her in general, but it doesn’t excuse the particular threat Alex used (and I like to think that Alex wouldn’t have said it if she knew that aspect of Tucky’s past).  Thanks for the ‘ask’ and apologies for taking a while to answer--I was a bit under the weather (mentally----this damned virus!) but I’m back now :)

I think Season 3 has to be the worst of the seasons for me. The whole Whispers storyline bothered me and I didn’t much like anything past episode 4 and 5. However, the best moment was the Chang backstory and the first episode, Mother’s Day. Loved Poussey’s touching storyline.

Agreed re: s3 being the worst (as I said before, my #lingering s3 bitterness tag pretty much says it all lol). One of the cruelest things for me --as a fan-- was seeing the 3x04 “girlfriends” bunk scene (where Alex and Piper are acting super-cute and affectionate around each other--ie. their usual selves) and thinking “Whew! They’re back, no more weirdness, no more hate-sex, Vauseman are back on track!!!!!”....and then to have it all start to fall apart shortly afterwards. Bah. For me personally, the best parts of s3 were seeing Alex’s parallel descent into hell (while Piper was becoming Dark!Piper)-- terrified about Kubra trying to have her killed, paranoid about Lolly, and generally trying to keep her shit together while trying to stop Piper from getting into serious trouble in that stupid stupid Whispers storyline (all the while watching Piper getting closer and closer to whatsherface). I think Laura did a fantastic job in s3 of portraying Alex at some of the worst points of her life---in flashbacks and in the present-day. Laura's great in every season, but I think she really shone in s3. I did a series called “Top 10 Alex Vause Faces-Season 3″ where I did a scene analysis of significant AV moments in s3 (link here) that highlight some of her mamazing acting :)

So I’m rewatching Season 3 and I can’t help but think about how it became such a disaster by the end. Why introduce another woman into the picture just as Alex and Piper reunite? I was so disappointed by that.

I’m still using #lingering s3 bitterness in my tags lol so you know this question hits me hard :/ Of course, I was extremely disappointed that they resorted to using a cheap plot device like a love triangle that came wayyyyyyy out of nowhere (the one with Larry, of course, made sense---Piper was engaged to him when she and Alex reunited in s1). I think the show was just trying to (a) manufacture more Vauseman drama and, at the same time, (b) make Piper into an antihero because they thought that would make her (and Vauseman) “more interesting”. I find that ludicrous ---Alex and Piper’s relationship didn’t need more drama at that point--they were already at odds because Alex found out Piper had her thrown in prison again (not to mention the threat of Kubra hanging over their heads) *and*, this goes without saying, Piper is a fascinating, complex (maddeningly-complex, tbh) three-dimensional character who doesn’t need to be made more “interesting”. So yeah. It is what it is and thank god the Stella thing didn’t carry over into s4 is all I can add. Thanks for the ‘ask’!

Just watching Season 2 again and once again, I’m stumped by Piper’s decision to force Alex back into prison. She could have just read all of the letters Alex sent instead of proceeding with getting her thrown in prison again. And that lie proves to be detrimental to her later. Why do you think she does this? P.S Do you have a favourite episode or scene from that season?

Well, Piper asked Polly to call Alex’s probation officer *after* Piper and Alex had their visitation in 2x13 (in which Alex explained why she told the truth in court in 2x01). At that point, I think Piper’s (misplaced, it turns out) anger at Alex’s actions in 2x01 had dissipated and she was just left with sadness at the thought of Alex leaving forever (and fear of being left alone--which she tells Alex in that visitation)...so she rats Alex out and has her thrown in prison again. Favourite episode from s2 would have to be 2x10 because of all of the great Vauseman flashbacks, including their first ILY (which is one of my favourite things ever). I also loved 2x01 because Piper is such a great character and she’s in every scene in 2x01. Also, of course---their reunion in Chicago and Piper telling the court that Alex was the love of her life (the feels!!!) Thanks, as always, for the ‘asks’!
