“There are so many groups out there to help – and they really helped me get through this difficult time in my life.”

If you have a question about Fox Chase Cancer Center, ask Robin Luber. She spends every Wednesday volunteering at Fox Chase so you are likely to see her walking the halls helping patients and families or in the Family Surgical Waiting Lounge. She also volunteers in Social Services assisting the social workers with administrative tasks. “I love this job,” shared Robin. “I help patients, their families, and the staff. It’s very rewarding.” And that’s coming from a former patient.

In 1995, when she was working full-time at Verizon, Robin had her annual mammogram at her local hospital. The results of all her mammograms never indicated a problem. Robin felt a hard thickening on the side of her right breast and intuitively knew she needed further testing. An ultrasound did not reveal a problem either.

Robin’s gynecologist performed a fine needle aspiration which was also inconclusive. Because 2 out of the 3 tests showed no problem, her doctor suggested she “watch and wait” for the next year. But cancer was on Robin’s radar screen. Two years before, Robin’s mother was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. She had a lumpectomy and 5 years of tamoxifen and is still cancer free at age 89.

Robin’s cancer never showed up on a mammogram or an ultrasound.

“The thickening became more obvious to me over the next year as I had lost some weight,” explained Robin, who could wait no longer. She decided to get a second opinion from a Fox Chase surgeon, Marcia Boraas, MD, FACS, who performed a biopsy. On her 42nd birthday, Robin’s phone rang. “As soon as I heard who it was, I knew it was cancer,” Robin shared. “I had stage III cancer with a 6 ½ centimeter mass.” Robin’s cancer never showed up on a mammogram or an ultrasound.

Lori Goldstein, MD, a medical oncologist, was an integral member of Robin’s treatment team and suggested she enroll in a clinical trial. By enrolling in a clinical trial, Robin was given standard treatment for her disease, plus additional drugs which may have reduced her risk of recurrence.

Robin underwent courses of chemotherapy and radiation after her single mastectomy. A year and a half later, she had reconstruction on her breast. Robin elected to have the TRAM flap procedure, in which tissue from her body was used to replace the breast removed during surgery. A flap is an area of skin, fat and sometimes muscle, which is moved from the stomach, back or other area of the body to the chest area.

“Dr. Goldstein is a brilliant team leader who made all the right decisions.”

Admittedly, Robin used to ask Dr. Goldstein for the “numbers” over and over. “I wanted to know what my chances of survival were. But she wouldn’t discuss it. Now I can say, Yes, Dr. Goldstein. You were right about everything,” she related.

Robin took tamoxifen for 5 years and believes she is withstanding the test of time. She now sees Cynthia Bergman, MD, FACOG, a surgical oncologist, as her gynecologist and Dr. Marcia Boraas as her breast surgeon oncologist. “My healthcare professionals at Fox Chase look out for me. I put all my trust in them.”

So well, in fact, that Robin decided to volunteer at Fox Chase after she retired from a 35-year career at Verizon as a system technician. “I feel more appreciated here at Fox Chase than I did in corporate America,” said Robin.

Initially, Robin was interested in volunteering in the pet therapy program. She adopted a schnauzer named Trudy and trained her for certification, which she just updated for 2015. Trudy and Robin are often seen visiting patients and staff.  Trudy’s daughter, Jackie, joined their family in 2011.  They are a mother-daughter Schnauzer team that brings lightness and affection to current patients. Trudy’s fame was recently memorialized in the Fox Chase mural; she can be spotted as the only canine eye companion painted on the wall to celebrate the generous and warm volunteer community at Fox Chase.

Robin wants other women with breast cancer to consider joining one of the many support groups in the community. She is thankful to the Wellness Community; Linda Creed; Living Beyond Breast Cancer; the American Cancer Society – Look Good. My wife and I always look forward to the winter. We live in the suburbs of Philadelphia, but we spend our winters away from snowy Pennsylvania in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where we get to enjoy the southern warmth at our vacation home.

In November of 2014, we were preparing to travel to the Outer Banks for Thanksgiving when I began to experience severe stomach pain. It wasn’t something I’d ever had before, so I went to see my family doctor immediately. After a CT scan, the doctor told me I had a nodule in my left groin.

My doctor told my wife and I that there was only so much he could do for me, so we began to search for a second opinion. My sister, who previously worked in the local hospital’s ER, knew a doctor at Fox Chase Cancer Center, and had heard good things. We were guided to Dr. David Chen, who scheduled a biopsy of the nodule. I then received the news I never expected to hear: I had a rare form of cancer called peritoneal mesothelioma.

We were a little lost when we first arrived at Fox Chase, and it must have looked like it, because immediately a man in a lab coat standing nearby stopped what he was doing and took the time to personally guide us to our destination. That set the foundation for the incredible level of hospitality and kindness we encountered at Fox Chase.

I then met with Dr. Sanjay Reddy, who impressed me with his skill and kindness. He explained the procedures that I would have to undergo, and introduced me to a team of doctors who would collaborate in my care, including Dr. Chen and Dr. Hossein Borghaei. Then Dr. Reddy gave me his personal cell phone number and told me I could call any time if I had any issues or concerns. I had never had any doctor do that before.

Dr. Reddy’s plan involved several steps. First was a minor surgical procedure to clear a bowel blockage. That would be followed by three rounds of chemotherapy. Then, he would perform an invasive 14-hour surgery to remove a portion of my intestine. Part of the surgery involved a chemo-flush performed by a HIPEC team. HIPEC stands for hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. It is a newer method of treatment that delivers drugs directly to the abdomen during surgery.

Through the months of treatment, the difficult surgery, and my two-week inpatient stay as I recovered, the staff at Fox Chase took impeccable care of me and my family. While I was in surgery, my wife and sister received hourly updates from the doctors on how it was going, and I never felt alone as I went into recovery. Someone was by my side at all times when my wife couldn’t be.

I’m both legally blind and hearing impaired, and the nurses and staff accommodated my every need. Even my wife and sister received top-notch care while I was recovering. After long days at the hospital, both were escorted to their cars late at night when the parking garages were locked up.

The doctors and nurses helped make my transition home easier, too. Dr. Reddy was never bothered by any phone call, and he and others checked on me regularly. Now I come back to Fox Chase every few months for scans and blood work, with no signs of the cancer returning, and no additional treatment needed.

The amazing thing about Fox Chase is the people. I know that Fox Chase is the place to be, and I can’t say enough good things about it.

During Surgery..

I got in first thing in the morning and they tested my pee to see if I was pregnant and I wasn't so I got totally undressed, they put in an IV, and I signed lots of paperwork. Then my doctor came in and answered all my questions, then the anesthesiologist, and then it was time for surgery! I only slightly remember the room and having my arms out, then being woken up as they pushed my upper body up to wrap it in the ace bandages. I cried when I woke up because I was so happy I had done it and gone through with it fully. My boyfriend was taught about my drains and any warning signs we needed to look for. We were given a prescription and sent home within about two hours out of surgery. I threw up on myself in the car (which was actually pretty funny) and my friends were waiting for me when I got home. It's been two days now and I feel pretty okay, just sore mostly. It was nice to get to sponge bathe today cuz I was super gross.
