Is it possible to conceal a house in an Alpine slope while still exploiting the wonderful views and allowing light to enter the building? Dutch Architect Bjarne Mastenbroek - architect of my own former canalhouse on the Java Eiland in Amsterdam - showed it can be done. The interior is a balanced mix of contemporary Dutch Design. The result a beautiful Dutch holiday home in the mountains of Switzerland.
Dutch designer Hella Jongerius named this piece the Polder Sofa. In Holland, the word ‘polder’ refers to flatlands that have been reclaimed from the sea by means of dykes and drainage canals – a landscape evoked by the sofa’s asymmetrical structure.
