A pirate company that helped get NY off the ground by trading in a commodity known as the African slaves. They were founded in 1625 and lasted until 1664. Don't ever let anyone tell you the lie that "they" hide information or symbols because they don't. That's why the flag of the WIC is hanging right in Epcot Center in the hall of flags. They brag different... That blue, orange, and white were their colors. #MapMondays, the earliest map of Manhattan!! This 1639 map is the earliest known portrayal of Manhattan and its environs. The map was likely drawn by Johannes Vingboons, cartographer to the prince of Nassau for the West India Company of Holland. The map depicts Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam with plantations and small farms dispersed throughout the area. The legend lists the names of the settlements and includes a grist mill, two sawmills and "Quarters of the blacks, the Company's Slaves." There are also four Indian villages in today's Borough of Brooklyn.
