On this day in 1674 the Treaty of Westminster was signed by the Netherlands and England, giving the Colony New Netherland to the British and ending the Third Anglo-Dutch War. The British changed the name of the colony to New York, following an attack organized by the Duke of York that led to the surrender of Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant. This incredible map gives a great look into British New York, decades before the Revolutionary War. The British removed the wall along Wall Street and expanded the city north and into the harbor via landfill. While many of the street names remain the same today, the British did rename many streets with names like King, Queen, Duke and Crown.
