Episode 31: OPGEDUVELD

What happens when hip-hop veterans join forces with an up-and-coming crew from the opposite side of the country?  This week we took a look at the outcome of just such a collaboration: the self titled album from Nederhop supergroup Opgeduveld, combining the MC’s and DJ’s of both Opgezwolle and Rotterdam based crew Duvel Duvel. 

In an interview with Hiphopinjesmoel.nl Opgezwolle MC Rico explained that his crew were already big fans of the sounds that Duvel Duvel was putting out by the time they asked the Rotterdam-based rappers to be featured on their 2002 track Pimp Rappers.

Soon after the members of the two groups decided to press on with further collaborations, while attempting to maintain the somewhat improvised nature of their first track; to quote MC Duvel:

“It was then we thought, let’s record a full album, but definitely in a raw manner, Whoever is in the studio on any given day gets to flow on the track, whoever isn’t, missed out.”

Although over a decade has passed since the two groups came together for a brief, and intensely creative moment, the album still pulsates with the sort of frenetic energy that those behind it sought to capture.  In their retrospective interview with Hiphopinjesmoel.nl MC’s from both groups reflected in similar ways on the 10th anniversary of the release.  Rico of Opgezwolle commenting that, 

“With Opgezwolle we had almost everything thought out before going into the studio to record, this [record] was almost completely recorded ‘on the spot’, super spontaneous and raw.

Duvel seconded this, adding. “It was fate, the right place at the right time.  Simply some run of the mill extraterrestrial shit.”
