One of my friends was looking for a guide to bootleg Sailor Moon DVDs because she's paranoid she'll buy another fake set. Honestly, after I started digging through Ebay and Amazon I began to wonder if it would be easier to collect photos of the official sets instead.
The sets above are ALL bootlegs. That does not mean there are no other obvious covers/sets out there or that there won't be new ones. In fact, I still have an image or two I could have added, but they were so close to these that I never bothered. But if you have more sets feel free to reblog this post with the image attached in your comment. All of the images above were collected from Ebay and Amazon.
How to tell your DVD is a bootleg
If a Sailor Moon set is REGION 0 it is a bootleg! North American DVDs are always Region 1. This means your DVD is coded to work on a DVD or Blu-ray player in North America (see here for more info).
If the seller claims to have dubbed seasons 1-5 + all 3 movies in English chances are that set is a bootleg. Season 5 was never dubbed in English and it has never been officially subtitled in English here either. The subtitle is probably in Chinese or subtitled by a fan.
Your DVDs should be published by either ADV, Pioneer or Genon if they are released in North America. Some sets will have a giant "Signature Series" mark in red and white across the top of the cover. These are OFFICIAL, unless bootlegs eventually pop up. At the moment there aren't any that I know of.
Official DVDs will also have copyright information for the owners of Sailor Moon. You'll see Naoko Takeuchi's name, as well as the copyright holders of that time printed. So Genon, or any of the other names I mentioned above. If the copyright info is not listed then the DVD is probably a bootleg.
Does the cover feature unofficial art or Fan Art?
Then it is most definitely a bootleg. A cover will pretty much 99.99999% of the time feature art that is official and not fan made.
I hope this helps you in your future Sailor Moon shopping adventures. Feel free to reblog with other bootleg covers, or tips.
