The laughter of children echoed through the grand halls of Dwayne's mansion, their tiny feet pattering across the polished floors as I gathered their toys.
The warm scent of vanilla from the afternoon's baking still lingered in the air, mingling with the faint trace of Dwayne's cologne that always seemed to settle into the fabric of the home.
It was a comforting smell, one I had grown to associate with security—a stark contrast to the suffocating tension that awaited me at home.
I stole a glance at the clock. 7:42 PM.
I was already late.
My stomach twisted, dread seeping into my bones as I adjusted the strap of my bag over my shoulder. The excuse of my car not starting would only buy me so much time before his patience ran out.
My fingers trembled slightly as I typed out a quick text to my husband, letting him know I'd be home soon.
I could already hear his response in my head. "Excuses, always excuses."
Dwayne's deep voice pulled me from my spiraling thoughts. "Hey, you sure you're good to get home?"
I turned to see him standing near the foyer, his towering frame relaxed but observant.
His dark eyes, sharp with experience, studied me with quiet concern. He had offered to call a car, but I had refused, not wanting to risk my husband's paranoia. I'd already asked for enough favors.
"Yeah, I'll be fine," I lied, forcing a small smile.
His jaw tightened, as if he didn't quite believe me, but he didn't push. Instead, he grabbed his keys from the table. "Come on, I'll take you."
My heart stuttered. "Dwayne, you don't have to—"
"I want to," he interrupted gently. "It's late. I'm not about to let you take the bus or wait around for some stranger to pick you up."
I hesitated. I knew refusing again would only make him more suspicious. So I nodded, murmuring a quiet "thank you" as he opened the door for me.
The ride home was mostly silent, save for the low hum of the radio and the occasional glance Dwayne stole in my direction. My fingers dug into the hem of my sweater as we neared my house, the familiar weight of dread settling back into my chest.
The porch light was off.
He was waiting.
As soon as Dwayne pulled up to the curb, I swallowed hard and reached for the door handle. "Thanks again," I murmured, trying to keep my voice steady.
But Dwayne's hand caught my wrist before I could leave. His touch was warm, grounding.
"If anything's wrong, you call me. No hesitation." His voice was firm, leaving no room for argument.
I nodded quickly, slipping out of the car before he could read the fear in my eyes.
The moment I stepped inside, I knew I had made a mistake.
The air was thick with the sharp bite of whiskey, the room dimly lit by the flickering television. I barely had time to set my bag down before I heard the creak of a chair.
"You think I'm stupid?"
My breath hitched.
Then the first blow landed.
The force sent me stumbling, my back slamming into the wall as stars burst behind my eyelids. My husband's voice was a low snarl, laced with venom and alcohol.
"Out there whoring around? You think I wouldn't notice?"
My vision blurred as I tried to steady myself, my lip already swelling from the impact. "I wasn't—"
A second blow cut me off, this time knocking me to my knees.
Then, suddenly—
The door burst open.
Dwayne moved like a storm, his massive frame cutting through the dimly lit room with terrifying ease. Before my husband could react, Dwayne had him by the collar, yanking him away from me as if he weighed nothing.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" Dwayne's voice was low, dangerous—nothing like the warm, easy tone I was used to. His hands, usually gentle, were white-knuckled as he shoved my husband against the wall.
For the first time ever, I saw fear in my husband's eyes.
Dwayne leaned in close, his voice a lethal whisper. "You're done. She's leaving."
My husband sputtered, trying to regain some of the control he was so used to wielding. "She's my wife—"
"She's not yours," Dwayne cut him off, his voice laced with pure authority. He finally let go, stepping back just enough for my husband to gulp in a breath. "She's packing her things. She's coming with me. And if you so much as breathe in her direction after tonight, I'll make sure you regret it."
The room was silent except for my shallow breathing.
Dwayne turned to me then, his expression softening only slightly. His large, calloused hand reached for mine, but he didn’t touch me right away—he waited, as if giving me the choice. As if letting me decide.
I swallowed hard, my body aching as I forced myself to my feet. For years, I had been trapped in this cycle of fear, flinching at every shadow, walking on eggshells. But in that moment, with Dwayne standing between me and my nightmare, I realized something.
I was done.
I nodded. “Okay.”
Dwayne’s hand closed around mine—warm, steady, protective. He led me past my husband without another glance, and I didn’t dare look back.
Dwayne's Home
The moment we stepped inside his home, the tension in my chest began to unravel, but the weight of exhaustion settled in its place.
Dwayne guided me to the kitchen, the overhead lights casting a golden glow against his tanned skin.
“Sit,” he murmured, nudging a barstool out for me. “I’ll grab the first aid kit.”
I obeyed without a word, my hands gripping the cool marble countertop as I tried to ground myself. Everything felt surreal.
My face throbbed, my ribs ached, but for the first time in years, I didn’t feel like I was suffocating.
Dwayne returned a moment later, a small white kit in his hands. He pulled up a stool beside me, setting the supplies down before carefully tilting my chin up.
His touch was impossibly gentle, his thumb brushing against my cheek as he examined the damage. His brows knitted together, his jaw clenching for a fraction of a second before he exhaled through his nose, regaining his composure.
“This might sting a little,” he warned, unscrewing the cap of an antiseptic bottle.
I nodded, bracing myself as he dabbed a cotton pad against the cut on my lip. A sharp sting flared through my skin, but his other hand rested on my knee, grounding me. His warmth seeped through the fabric of my leggings, a silent reassurance.
He worked carefully, methodically, his fingers tracing over each bruise with a softness that made my throat tighten. When he finished, he tossed the used supplies in the trash and sat back slightly, studying me.
“You’re staying here,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
I blinked. “Dwayne, I can’t—”
“You can,” he interrupted. “And you will. I’m not letting you go back to that.”
His words carried a quiet, unwavering conviction.
I lowered my gaze, my fingers curling into the hem of my sweater. “I didn't know how to leave,” I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. “Every time I tried, he found ways to pull me back.”
Dwayne reached for my hand, his calloused fingers wrapping around mine. “You don’t have to do this alone,” he murmured. “I’ll help you.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat as he continued, his voice gentle but firm.
“Listen to me, sweetheart.” The nickname caught me off guard, sending warmth curling through my chest.
His thumb brushed over the back of my hand, grounding me. “That wasn’t love. That was control, power, abuse. And you deserve more than that. You deserve to be treated with love and respect. You deserve to feel safe.”
My breath hitched.
He gave my hand a gentle squeeze. “You are safe now.”
For the first time in years, I believed it.
The next three weeks had been a whirlwind. With Dwayne's help, I had filed for divorce. His lawyers handled everything, making sure my husband couldn’t manipulate or intimidate me into staying. But he had tried.
The late-night calls. The threats. The veiled promises of “change.”
Dwayne had intercepted most of them. And when my husband tried showing up at my old job, Dwayne handled it in a way that ensured he’d never try again. He never told me what he said, but the look in his eyes that night told me enough.
And now, I was free.
I sat curled up on the massive couch in Dwayne’s living room, the scent of fresh coffee and cedarwood lingering in the air. I had barely noticed him enter the room until I felt the couch dip beside me.
“Whatcha thinking about, darling?”
I looked up at him, heat creeping up my neck at the pet name. It had started subtly—"sweetheart" here, “darling” there—but now he said it with ease, like it was meant for me.
I shrugged, playing with the hem of my sleeve. “Just… everything.”
Dwayne reached out, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “You did it,” he murmured. “You got out.”
I met his gaze, my chest tightening at the way he looked at me—like I was something precious, something worth protecting.
For the first time in my life, I felt wanted. Cherished.
His fingers trailed along my jaw, tilting my face slightly upward. “You’re beautiful,” he murmured, his voice thick with something unspoken. “You always have been.”
I swallowed hard, my pulse fluttering wildly in my throat. “Dwayne…”
He smiled, slow and warm. “I like the way my name sounds when you say it.”
I exhaled a soft laugh, shaking my head. “You’re impossible.”
Dwayne never rushed me.
In the days and weeks that followed, he gave me space to breathe, to heal, to be.
He was always there—steady, constant—but he never pushed, never made me feel like I owed him something just because he had helped me escape.
Instead, he courted me.
Not in an obvious, flashy way, but in the quiet, intentional way that made my chest ache with something I wasn’t ready to name.
It was in the way he made sure I ate, setting a plate in front of me even when I swore I wasn’t hungry.
The way he left a cup of tea on my nightstand every evening, chamomile with a touch of honey, because he remembered I liked it that way.
The way he listened—truly listened—when I talked, even if it was just about a book I had picked up or a song I liked.
And it was in the way he touched me.
Not possessively, not with any expectation—just a hand on the small of my back when we walked together, a knuckle brushing against my wrist when he passed me something, a lingering touch when he tucked my hair behind my ear.
Small things.
But they mattered.
And before I knew it, I had fallen for him.
It terrified me.
I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the guest room—the room that had become mine since I had moved in—and stared at my reflection.
I looked… different.
The bruises had faded. The weight of fear no longer sat so heavily on my shoulders. My skin had color again, my eyes weren’t as hollow.
I was healing.
But the wounds inside—the ones my ex-husband had carved into my spirit—those still lingered.
I wanted Dwayne.
God, I wanted him. The way he made me feel safe, the way he looked at me like I was something precious. The way he called me darling in that deep, honeyed voice of his.
But was it too soon?
I had just gotten divorced. I had spent years being told I was unlovable, unwanted, that no one else would want me. Was I really ready for someone like him?
I chewed on my lip, my fingers gripping the hem of my sweater.
The sound of a soft knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts.
“You okay, sweetheart?”
I exhaled slowly before answering. “Yeah… come in.”
The door creaked open, and Dwayne stepped inside. He was dressed casually, in a fitted black t-shirt and gray sweats, but he still looked ridiculously good. His tattoos stretched over his bicep, his presence filling the room like he belonged there.
He took one look at my face and frowned.
“What’s going on?”
I swallowed, debating whether to lie, but I knew better. Dwayne had a way of seeing through me.
“I just… I don’t know,” I murmured, crossing my arms over my chest. “It feels too soon. Us. Or—whatever this is.”
He stepped closer, slow and deliberate, until he was standing right in front of me. He didn’t touch me yet, just waited, giving me space.
Then, his voice came, deep and gentle. “Sweetheart… you didn’t just get out of a marriage.”
I blinked up at him, confused. “What?”
His eyes softened, and when he spoke, his words unraveled something tight inside my chest.
“You’ve been out of love with him for a long time,” he murmured. “The divorce was just the paperwork. You checked out of that marriage a long time ago, didn’t you?”
My breath hitched.
Because he was right.
My ex-husband had crushed every part of me that once cared. He had drained me of love, of happiness, of everything. I had been a ghost in that relationship long before I had ever signed those papers.
Dwayne reached for me then, his knuckles brushing my jaw. His touch was warm, grounding.
“You don’t have to be scared of this,” he said. “Not with me.”
Tears burned at the back of my eyes. “I don’t want to mess this up,” I admitted, my voice trembling.
“You won’t.” His fingers curled under my chin, tilting my face up. “I’m not going anywhere, darling.”
The way he said it—like it was a promise—made something deep inside me crack open.
I believed him.
And just like that, the fear started to fade.
Dwayne had been patient. So damn patient.
He never pushed, never asked for more than I was ready to give. He let me come to him in my own time.
But tonight, he wanted to take me out.
“A date?” I asked, raising a brow as I leaned against the kitchen counter.
Dwayne smirked, setting down the glass of water he’d been drinking. “Yeah, sweetheart. A date. You remember those, don’t you?”
I rolled my eyes, but my lips twitched. “I don’t know, it’s been a while.”
“Well,” he stepped closer, bracing a hand against the counter beside me, “I figure it’s about time you got reminded what it’s like to be treated right.”
I wasn’t ready for this.
At least, that’s what I kept telling myself.
But when Dwayne asked me if I’d let him take me out—somewhere nice, somewhere just us—I didn’t say no.
I wanted this. I wanted him.
So, when he knocked on my door that evening, I let myself be excited.
I let myself feel.
Dwayne showed up looking like a dream.
Dressed in a crisp, dark navy button-down that clung to his broad chest and tailored slacks that emphasized the powerful build of his thighs, he looked effortless. His skin was warm and golden under the glow of the porch light, tattoos peeking out from under his sleeve, and his smile—soft and knowing—sent heat curling low in my belly.
And then there was me.
I had spent what felt like forever picking out an outfit, wanting to feel beautiful. I had settled on a sleek black dress—nothing too revealing, but it hugged my curves in a way that made me feel good. Dwayne’s eyes darkened the second he saw me, his lips parting slightly as he took me in.
“Damn,” he murmured, voice husky. “You look stunning, sweetheart.”
The way he said it, like he felt it, like he wasn’t just saying it to be nice, made warmth flood my chest.
He extended his hand, and I took it.
I didn’t even hesitate.
The restaurant was intimate, candlelit, with a soft melody floating through the air. Dwayne had picked a place with a private table, away from prying eyes.
He was the perfect gentleman—pulling out my chair, pouring my wine, making sure I felt comfortable. But beneath it all, there was tension.
It was in the way his fingers brushed my wrist when he passed me a menu.
In the way his gaze lingered on my lips when I took a sip of my drink.
In the way his voice dipped lower when he spoke, smooth as honey, deliberate.
And then there was me—my body betraying me, heat rising under my skin every time he so much as looked at me a certain way.
The air between us crackled, thick with something neither of us was addressing.
Until the drive home.
The second we stepped inside, I felt it shift.
Dwayne shut the door behind us, locking it, his movements slow and measured. I turned to thank him for dinner, but the words caught in my throat the moment I saw his expression.
His dark eyes burned with something raw, something barely restrained.
I swallowed.
“Dwayne—”
He was in front of me in two strides, his hands settling at my waist, large and warm, his fingers splayed against the fabric of my dress.
“Tell me to stop,” he murmured, his voice low, thick with restraint. “If you’re not ready, I’ll stop.”
I should have hesitated.
I should have thought about it more.
But I didn’t.
I shook my head, breathless. “I don’t want you to stop.”
Something in him snapped.
His lips crashed against mine, slow but demanding, his hands tightening at my waist, pulling me closer. His kiss was deep, drugging, his mouth hot and insistent, tasting like wine and something uniquely him.
I moaned against his lips, and he groaned in response, his grip flexing as he pressed me against the wall.
His scent enveloped me—sandalwood, spice, masculine warmth.
His body heat seeped into mine, his touch possessive but gentle, like he was savoring me, like he was memorizing me.
“God, you feel good,” he rasped, lips trailing down my jaw, grazing the sensitive skin at my neck.
A shiver shot down my spine.
His hands slid down, fingertips ghosting over my hips, teasing the hem of my dress.
I arched into him, craving more.
“Dwayne…” I breathed, and he groaned at the sound of his name on my lips.
His forehead dropped to mine, his breathing ragged.
“We don’t have to go further tonight,” he murmured, brushing his thumb over my cheek. “I want you, darling. So bad. But only if you’re ready.”
I stared up at him, heart pounding, my body begging for more.
But it wasn’t just desire. It was trust.
And for the first time in years, I knew—this was real.
“I want this,” I whispered, my fingers curling into his shirt. “I want you.”
His eyes darkened, and then—
Everything melted.
Dwayne didn’t make me wait.
The second I told him I wanted this—wanted him—something shifted. His restraint unraveled, but not in a way that scared me.
No, he took his time.
He touched me like he had been waiting for this moment forever, like I was something to be savored.
His lips found mine again, slower this time, deeper—like he was tasting me, drinking me in. His hands slid down my body, following every curve, warm and steady, worshipping every inch of skin he uncovered.
By the time we made it to his bedroom, my dress was pooled at my feet, and my mind was nothing but heat and need.
“Look at you,” he murmured, his gaze trailing down my body like he was committing me to memory. “So beautiful, darling.”
The way he said it made me shiver.
I reached for him, my fingers skimming over the hard planes of his chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heartbeat beneath my palm. He was solid, warm, safe.
And when he finally pressed me into his sheets, covering my body with his, I knew—this wasn’t just about desire.
This was about something deeper.
He moved with purpose, his touch both firm and gentle, every kiss, every stroke making it clear—he wasn’t just taking me.
He was claiming me.
Showing me what it meant to be wanted, cherished.
And when he whispered my name against my skin, when his hands held me like I was something fragile yet untouchable—
I felt invincible. It was like every wall I had erected around my heart crumbled under the weight of his affection, and in its place grew something warm and intoxicating.
“Stay with me,” he breathed, his voice barely above a whisper, as if he were afraid to shatter the moment. But there was nothing fragile about the connection we forged that night. It was solid, undeniable, and it thrummed in time with our racing hearts.
“Always,” I replied, weaving my fingers through his dark hair, pulling him closer until our breaths mingled, matching the rhythm of our entwined bodies.
His lips captured mine again—a heated promise that set every nerve ending alight. The world outside faded into distant noise as we became lost in each other, wrapped in silken sheets, illuminated by the soft glow of moonlight spilling through the window.
Dwayne’s hands explored me with an intensity that left my breath ragged and my skin prickling with delight. Each caress was deliberate—an unhurried journey that seemed to whisper secrets only we could understand. I could feel him everywhere: in the way he ignited fire in my veins and tethered me to reality with his steady presence.
“Tell me what you need,” he murmured against my shoulder, his lips tracing a trail down my skin that made me arch into him, craving more of his heat.
“I need you,” I replied, each word laced with desperation, the truth of it hanging heavy in the air between us.
His gaze bore into mine—a cocktail of possessiveness and tenderness swirling within those depths. “Then I’ll give you everything,” he promised, a vow spoken with fervor that sent tremors through me.
With a swift motion, he shifted above me, positioning himself with an overwhelming urgency yet tempered by a gentleness that made my heart swell. In that moment, everything outside these walls ceased to exist—there was only us and the electric connection fueling our every movement.
As I surrendered to him wholly, feeling him fill the spaces left empty for far too long, I realized it wasn’t just passion igniting between us; it was a promise of something enduring. Dwayne wasn’t just marking this moment—he was etching himself deep into my soul.
The intensity built slowly at first—a slow burn gradually transforming into an inferno that consumed my thoughts and desires. Time stretched infinitely as we shared whispered confessions and soft laughter amidst gasps of pleasure. Every shared moment danced at the edge of eternity until the world outside faded entirely.
And then it happened—an exquisite connection peaking into an explosion of stars as our bodies moved together harmoniously like celestial bodies caught in orbit. In the afterglow of our shared ecstasy, as we lay tangled beneath layers of soft sheets and warmth, Dwayne pressed a soft kiss to my forehead, grounding me back to reality.
He held me close like I was the most precious thing in his life as silence enveloped us—a cocoon woven from whispered secrets and newfound promises. My heart swelled within my chest; I felt seen in a way I hadn’t thought possible.
“Stay close,” he said softly after a long pause. “Every day from now on.”
A lump formed in my throat at his words he sincerity behind them resonating deep within me. This was more than a fleeting night of passion; it was the beginning of something profound, something I had always longed for but never truly believed I could have.
I melted.
Completely.
