Late shift, sunless sky Original art by DWC Marshal Arts Commission for Dr. Huxley
I see a lot of worldbuilding folks presenting armies at war like toy soldiers, very glitzy and well-tailored uniforms. I'm also guilty of this, but rectifying it. Truth is, no amount of intricate design rules survives the reality of production logistics.
Examples above are loosely based off what I know from ACW uniform realities, tho the principle exists universally. You can also view this as a "before-after" kind of deal- fictional nation x starts like this, but degrades quickly. THE GRIT makes the world feel more real. In all honesty, the fit should be shlubby. Depending on the time period, uniforms would come like "one sized fits all." If they're really in it, they could be too small, discolored- wool shrinks in boiling water washes. Etc.
Merry Christmas, Louis Percival.
Costume design for Louis Percival. (TOP = NEW, BOTTOM = OLD)
Making my characters’ clothing look a little less generic is a bit of a challenge- but a fun one. When I thought of the stories and arcs these guys could take, I shamefully neglected thinking of more interesting visual compositions for their outfits. As a person who doesn’t exactly have an adventurous wardrobe, trying to think outside of the box on this was difficult.
Cosplaying and being forced to consider organic elements of a costume, having to think about flow, and knowing what pieces to get for some cons over the same was eye-opening. And while I can’t say I’m well versed in it now, it did make me reflect on some design-choices I’ve been avoiding for long.
