The War Games
I love these colourisations so much! Obviously they cut out whole swathes of the story (including some much-needed supporting character stuff), but for cutting 10 episodes down into 90 minutes it's incredibly impressive, and it didn't even have any chaotic montages like The Daleks.
I adore that they used Murray Gold's music for the Master in some of the bits with the War Chief, given that he's a bit of a proto-Master (renegade Time Lord who wants the Doctor to do evil with him). The other little continuity details to connect it with the modern show were also so exciting, especially showing Gallifrey as we're used to seeing it nowadays. Using the 21st century Doctors when he's picking his face was also incredibly cute, though why on earth they used the version of Ten with the weird hair from the 50th anniversary I don't know. Giving him a whole proper modern regeneration scene was also fantastic. Was the Jon Pertwee stuff in the TARDIS done digitally somehow? I assume it must have been. We even got a little nod to the UNIT dating controversy with the flickering date.
The story itself isn't new to me, so I don't have much to say on that front except that I still love it and it still made me cry when Zoe and Jamie had to leave at the end. I may go and watch their Tales of the TARDIS to make myself feel better.
This was a really fantastic colourisation and abridgement. I really hope they continue doing these! I also rewatched The Daleks one earlier with my dad, who hadn't seen the story since it aired 61 years ago, and we both had so much fun. I love that they have the freedom to play around with things (editing, score, effects, etc.) because they're not taking anything away. We still have the full and original versions of the story, but here we get an alternative way of viewing them and they're so much fun!
I will end this reaction by mentioning, as I realised when I watched The War Games originally, that 1969 (when these episodes were made) is closer to 1917 than it is to today. Time!
