People have asked what my Looming Gaia races look like as children. Here's the first set! These ones are "commoners", meaning they are peoples which can't use magic.
Here's an image of the adult versions: fav.me/dc6c8vu
Dworfs are a commoner species on Looming Gaia. They are the smallest of all commoners, standing at half the size of humans. Despite their size, they boast twice the strength of humans. The average dworfen child is as strong as the average human adult.
Because of their odd size, this species struggles to integrate with peoples outside their own kind. Their eyes are sensitive to bright light, which predisposes them to regions with overcast climates. They can see quite well in the dark, however, and fair well in underground environments. They have poor mobility, hardly known for their speed or grace. But the dworfs’ impressive strength and hardy bodies make them a tough, industrious species.
At a glance, male and female dworfs can be difficult to distinguish from eachother. Both sexes grow facial and body hair, though this hair tends to grow longer and thicker for males. Males also have more muscle mass and less fat than females.
Dworfen skin may be either gold or silver in color, and it wrinkles with age. Offspring of a gold and silver dworf will not have blended skin, instead having an equal chance of inheriting either color. Their hair may be red, brown, or black, and turns gray in their elder years. Their eyes are only pink or red. Dworfen faces appear angular and somewhat geometric, often compared to the faces of stone statues.
While dworfs usually prefer to cook what they eat, their stomachs are hardy enough to handle most food raw. They are omnivores with expansive diets. Their ability to sweat gives them great endurance, so they are able to exert themselves for a long time without rest.
The average adult dworf stands about 3 to 4 feet tall. A height over 5 feet is considered very abnormal for this species.
LIFE CYCLE
A dworf’s natural lifespan is about 70-80 years, but healthy individuals can easily live to see 90 years or more. Their tough bones and muscles degrade slower than a human’s, and they can remain quite strong even in old age. However, their bodies process fat and sugar poorly, so they are most often claimed by conditions like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes before their time.
They are a mammalian species which is able to breed year-round. Once impregnated by a male, female dworfs give birth to a baby 9 months later. More rarely, they may birth twins or triplets. Infant dworfs rely on their mother’s milk for at least 6 months. They are completely helpless for their first few years of life, reaching toddlerhood by age 2, childhood at 6, adolescence at 13, and adulthood at 18. They are considered elders by age 45, after which females become infertile. Males remain fertile their entire lives, though they tend to lose potency with each passing year after 30.
Given their natural toughness, dworfs can stay independent well into old age.
CULTURE
The dworfs’ small size makes it difficult to survive in societies among taller peoples. While their human cousins prove creative and adaptable, dworfs tend to stubbornly live among large populations of their own kind. This is particularly obvious in eastern Evik, which holds the largest population of dworfs on Looming Gaia.
It’s believed that dworfs were the first peoples to discover metalworking. It’s a craft they are still known for today. They are also known for their complex mining operations, which go hand-in-hand with metal forging. Historically, they have used the power of stone and metal to help them survive. This technology gave them an edge, especially when other peoples were still fumbling with wood and bone.
TRIVIA
-Dworf hair is notoriously strong. It’s often used to make ropes, armor, and other utility products.
-Dworfs are unrelated to dwarfs (people with dwarfism), although their name has roots related to the word “dwarf”. Dworfs can also have dwarfism.
-Eastern Evik has the highest population of dworfs on Looming Gaia, despite the fact that dworfs are not native to that region. They are only native to Noalen, but joined seafaring humans on a great migration to Evik in the 2nd Age.
-Krozlaug is a dworf. He is best known as the Divine of Industry and the father of all cyclopes.
Have you ever stayed in a castle?
I would highly recommend doing it at least once in your lifetime - it’s such an iconic experience
In the little town of Dworp , in the south of Brussels you can find the Gravenhof Castle . The gardens are beautifully maintained. The rooms were modern with WIFI,the dining room in the basement served delicious Belgian cuisine
I was really sad to hear that this wonderful place closed but I’m so happy I had the experience of staying there !
