“Hey kid, this is the bar entrance. Candy shop’s down the road and to the left,” the fool remarked, leaning idly on the tavern doorframe when he spotted the lad loitering. His arms were folded, an apple in one hand and banjo slung over the opposite shoulder.

     HE’D HAVE SMACKED dodger upside the head, if it weren’t for the fact everything ached.  it had been a while, a long while, since jesper had experienced anything close to this kind of fatigue; the last time, he’d been starving, weak, and travelling through goddamn desert land.  

     even weakened, jesper is surprised at how close the hunter ( did he call himself that?  had they updated the name in the last few decades? ) is willing to get; this would have been a prime opportunity to impale him on something.  he watches with narrowed eyes as the young man winds a bandage across the scratch.

     fucking werewolves.  always a bad idea to run afoul of them on full moons — worse still to get between them and anyone they had decided to make prey of.  he just . . . he didn’t want the boy to get bitten.  “ i’m not the one sitting within biting distance of a vampire, lad.  if you’re planning on doing something, i’d have to advise you against it.  i’m a little weak, not helpless. ”

“Oh a wise guy, huh?” Disbelief paints sweat covered features as one single sleeve swipes a dirty swath over skin already layered with dust. The sun looms overhead, a blinding heat whose rays stretch out over the desert city, chasing away any shadow in which he and the boy might rest their heads and Indiana stares at Dodger just as expectantly, neither willing to back down and hand over victory so easily. A yell from the crowd nearby catches the older man’s attention and he sighs with fond exasperation, shifting where he stands until fingers can dig into a back pocket. 

“Here, kid - “ A calloused palm shoves a few notes into the boy’s hands, one finger raising between them to point fixedly as if in admonishment. “Don’t say I never follow through, understand? That mix up in Singapore could have happened to anybody. You try squaring up a bill when forty guys are shootin’ at ya - hell. I did square it up. I got you out alive, didn’t I?” Lips twitch into the hint of a smile as fingers ruffle Dodger’s hair, hand curling around the back of his neck in order to give a playful shove. “Go on then. Show me whatever piece of crap you’ve found for us to ride around in .. and it better be worth what you’re makin’ me pay for it.”
