DYMM Typesets

Did You Miss Me? is an absolute beast of a fic to even think about book-binding, but luckily for all its fans... one of its authors kinda sorta maybe does typesetting as a part of her day job.

I was always going to get around to this, but the new Are You There? @krethes wrote kicked my butt into gear, so here you go! A Google Drive link to a folder with two different PDF typesets of DYMM? and a Word document version of the same, all free for your use!

The two typesets differ in formatting only. One of them has smaller font sizes and reduced color to hopefully save you from killing your printer or your budget the way I did. If you can print 8.5x11" documents double-sided, you can just open the PDFs and print them straight as they are, double-sided flipped on the short edge, to get them already arranged in signatures of 16 pages, or 8 sheets of double-sided paper. If you want to try your hand at making changes, you can use the Word docs, however, you MUST use Word. Google Docs is simply not powerful enough for the styles I had to create to get even this close to the chat bubbles.

There are instructions included in the Google Drive folder. Go wild. Have fun. Mind your budgets. DYMM? is still an utter beast, but I hope these typesets can at least remove the most daunting aspect of the project!

Ode to Insanity

I started to typeset DYMM, this post is for me, to track my sanity slipping away. Look at it like a journal entry. Journal entry No.1.

After trying for 2 weeks (in January 2025) to just download this fic with creator's styles turned on (AND FAILING) I found this incredible nice person on tumblr with a tutorial on how to do that.

GOD BLESS. So - easy right? Download with creator styles - print - bind. NOPE! PDF doesn't like making my life easy, I had to download as an EPUB - and edit in Calibre. Easy right? (I will say this a lot) NOPE!

After debugging the text-bubbles, I found the emails/twitters/instagram posts - and those were not nice to edit. I edited a box, another one just disappeared. I managed to not make any box disappear, now my text-bubbles reverted to some weird, wonky lineart.

Look at it - wtf is that box doing jumping out of frame like that? I didn't even touch it!

And wtf is this email doing??

And then I found the photos... Photos sent in chat. The wonderful authors did something super cool on AO3. If you click on a photo it opens in a new tab in full size, while just reading the texting in the fic you see a preview of the photo. This is cool. Printing it is not so cool.

So I stalked (sorry to the authors and binders I bothered) anyone who posted something remotely close to text-bubble printing/binding and how the photos were edited in a bind.

SOOOO - after a quick break (from January to...now July 18th) I am taking this up again.

Another kind binder answered my ask - and I am doing this manualy after all. Fuck html&css, I am not smart enough (yet) for that. What I am smart enough (now) for is doing it in Word. Which we al know Word is shit.

I just finished text-bubbles for 4 (or 3?) chapters. And if we believe Word, then that means 52 pages out of 2600+. I haven't thought yet about chapter-title art, I don't even wanna think about what I will do when getting to the Instagram and twitter posts later in the fic.

Sirius’s Serenade

(This scene came out of a discussion on Discord about Sirius’s voice in Did You Miss Me? by @fantismal and @krethes)

"Lily, what's your favorite song?" Sirius asked, grinning. 

Lily looked from Sirius to James like this was a trap. "Oh Sirius, you don't have to- " she started. 

"Never mind, I know one.” Sirius said. “James, can I borrow your phone?" James handed his phone over and Sirius searched for a moment before he found what he wanted. Then he pushed the ottoman into the middle of the living room and adjusted the lights. 

James had this small, fond smile as he watched Sirius set his stage. Perching on the ottoman, he winked at Remus but turned toward Lily. He hit play on James' phone and the intro began playing.

"The snow glows white on the mountain tonight…" he began. Lily gasped and James started laughing quietly. Remus wondered if impromptu concerts were  a common occurrence in their dorm at Durmstrang.

The song began to build. Even though Remus knew Sirius was a famous pop star, he was not prepared for the wall of sound that was Sirius’s voice. It was rich, strong, effortless. Remus was dumbstruck. 

When the song was over, they all applauded and Sirius gave an exaggerated bow. Remus just stared at him as Sirius climbed into his lap. "You're amazing." Remus murmured, pulling him close. Sirius gave him one of his dazzling smiles in return. 

"That wasn't for you. This is for you. I wrote it on Halloween." 

Sirius began to sing softly so only Remus could hear. He heard James and Lily leave the room, but he couldn't look away from Sirius's mesmerizing face. If he hadn't already fallen hard for him, Remus would have at this moment.

Fic Rec: Did you miss me? by @krethes and @fantismal

Listen, I've reblogged and talked about this fic a few times, but I cannot tell you enough how much this fic has captivated me.

It's a Wolfstar + the gang texting fic, with background Jily, Alice/Frank, and an effective OFC / OFC relationship. Sirius is a celebrity who is effectively kept prisoner by his family. Remus is an artist with a broken past. James a giant cinnamon roll who has gotten the shit end of the Black Family's sway. Lily is an obsessive student who also manages to be a little blind. Sev - aka Snape - is a disgusting incel we all love to hate. The Bubbles are a fluffy pile of, well, BDSM bubbles, and no, I won't explain. Floragold are literal queens and deserve everything, but do not trust their logic. Bella is deliciously complex and evil and sweet and I honestly switch from loving her and hating her and wanting to be her halfway through each chapter.

There are new chapters every MWF, with some occasional bonus content that is just *chef's kiss.* There's so much here that they started posting Jan 7, and it continues into May. You have time to catch up and join the fun, and I have a feeling we are just about to get into some really good stuff.

The characters and storylines are so complex and so well thought out. Every single line, every single word, is purposeful and beautiful and I can't even begin to explain how much in awe I am that this was created for free.

Don't even get me STARTED on the formatting. The screenshot in the phone above is directly from the fic. I had no idea a fic could be this developed and intuitive. It legitimately could be professionally formatted. It's undeniably amazing. And the fact that it looks the way it does, but they still take into account the accessibility of the chapter so that screen readers work as well.

Phenomenal story. Amazing formatting. It absolutely raises the bar on what fanfiction should be.

Fic Rec Friday

Because I read an anormal amount of fanfiction, I wanted to start recommending some of my favourites on Tumblr for you all to find as well! So every Friday I want to highlight a fic I’ve read that I loved and can’t stop thinking about.

This week’s recommendation:

CONTENT RATING: Explicit

DESCRIPTION: Though the new boy at Hogwarts University, James Potter, appears to be an adorable himbo with deep pockets, Remus Lupin and his friends instead find a horrifically dark past on Google. Did he really attack that boy and leave him for dead? Why won't he talk about his mysterious childhood best friend, "Pups"? Would it kill him to stop messing with his hair?

At least Remus got his phone back after losing it, but now he can't stop texting the mysterious number of the man who had sent it back. Padfoot is funny and charming, and Remus is NOT going to fall in love with him.

MY COMMENTS: I am absolutely obsessed with this fic! It’s a texting fic to rival all texting fics. The storyline is amazing paired with amazing characterizations of everyone, and it’s unique plot (also all of the couples are amazing, especially the OFC couple). It has me on my toes after every update (mon, wed, and fri) and I sometimes plan my morning schedule around the release of a new chapter. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone because it is that great.

Fic rec!

If there is anyone actually left in the Wolfstar fandom who is NOT reading “Did You Miss Me” by Fantismal and Krethes, you need to run, not walk, and read it right now. This is probably my favorite fanfic I’ve ever read, no joke. It keeps me up at night trying to figure out where it’s going next. It’s just ... such a gift. Do yourself a favor and read it nowwwwww!
