YOUR TAG ON THE ELEMENTARY POWER POINT THANK GOD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO LIKES THIS BETTER THAN BBC SHERLOCK. like i really liked bbc sherlock but i just never felt as invested in it as this? and i just really like elementary a lot and i always feel bad for thinking that because i'm afraid tumblr's gonna jump down my throat. but yeah objectively i like elementary's dynamic better and it's a really well made show so yeah. i'm tired and ranting because i watched the episode twice today.
OMG OKAY THANK YOU I HAD A SUPER LONG CONVERSATION ON THE PHONE TODAY WITH A FRIEND ABOUT HOW BBC SHERLOCK IS REALLY NOTHING SPECIAL LIKE IT'S REALLY GOOD BUT WE DON'T GET THE HYPE??? Like don't worry you are not alone but I can't exactly express this at our lunch table because idk we might be shunned or something for not thinking Sherlock is the end-all be-all of Sherlock Holmes adaptations
but yeah seriously like I think there are really problematic power dynamics between John and Sherlock in BBC Sherlock? Like John's whole role is to be basically Sherlock's cheerleader and be like "Oh wow you're wonderful and fantastic and nobody understands you but I do and sometimes you're annoying but it's just one of your quirks you're amazing" while Sherlock is just kind of always an insufferable asshole and nobody calls him out on it and literally every other character exists just to make him look smart?
while in Elementary you have genuine feelings about the other characters because while Sherlock is obviously a genius the other characters like play off that genius and shine in their own right??? And Joan is her own character that exists independently of Sherlock and acts in a way that would plausibly engage the interest of someone with Sherlock's personality. She calls him out on his bullshit and recognizes his personality flaws but still accepts him for his good qualities. She brings out the best in him, and he brings out the best in her, which creates for an engaging, healthy character dynamic. Like, honestly, I don't know how Sherlock isn't completely bored of John in BBC Sherlock. I'm bored of John in BBC Sherlock and I don't shoot holes in walls out of boredom.
If anything I think the John-Sherlock dynamic would be kind of like a self-sustaining poisonous feedback loop. John only encourages Sherlock to keep being an asshole and not face his problems because he thinks that loving a person means that letting their bullshit go even if it's destructive (pro tip: you can still accept a person's negative qualities as long as you encourage their positive qualities). Sherlock then continues to be an asshole who only alienates himself and keeps putting John in the subordinate position. Honestly I only think Sherlock keeps John around because John is the only person that will put up with his bullshit because he doesn't want to be a grown up and deal. Which is why when I watch Sherlock I see Johnlock and am like "ok yeah they're super gay for each other but meh"
while in Elementary Sherlock wants to keep Joan around because HE KNOWS SHE MAKES HIM A BETTER PERSON BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T PUT UP WITH HIS BULLSHIT. SHE'S PROBABLY THE FIRST PERSON IN HIS LIFE THAT ACTUALLY GAVE ENOUGH OF A CRAP ABOUT HIM TO BE THERE TO ACTUALLY CALL HIM OUT ON IT. He wants to be better and he knows she wants him to be better and he knows he makes her better and he wants her to be better and ugh I can't handle my feelings because they care about each other so much because yeah I guess one could jump off a building to prove their love to someone (and don't get me wrong, that's probably the best thing Sherlock ever did for their relationship because it was probably the first unselfish thing he ever did and gave John a chance to actually become independent and grow some balls) or you know they could do the adult thing and actually try and fight for their relationship because he knows its so positive so
(and don't even get me started on RDJ Sherlock vs. BBC Sherlock)
