(Dyslexia anon) So for a long time I have had a little trouble reading stuff aloud , spelling and sometimes just reading, and also seeing stuff on certain colours. Like if I try to read a license plate I can't really do it because it is on yellow. Does this sound like dyslexia or something else? and how would you go about getting tested in the uk for it?
I am sorry you are struggling with these things right now, I hope you can find answers and get the help you need :)
The main symptoms of dyslexia in teenagers and adults are as follows: [source]
poorly organised written work that lacks expression –for example, even though they may be very knowledgeable about a certain subject, they may have problems expressing that knowledge in writing
difficulty planning and writing essays, letters or reports
difficulties revising for examinations
trying to avoid reading and writing whenever possible
difficulty taking notes or copying
struggling to remember things such as a PINs or telephone numbers
struggling to meet deadlines
I would also recommend you clicking the source link and taking a look at the rest of the page as there are other symptoms and things too which can come from childhood. The things you mentioned about trouble reading stuff aloud, spelling and reading sounds like it could be linked to something such as dyslexia. The problem you have with seeing stuff on certain colours doesn't sound related to that, but I have actually heard of that problem and I do believe it is something that is fairly common! I remember our class talking about it when I was in school and the teacher was saying how they normally just use black text on white backgrounds for the powerpoint as it is very common for people not to be able to see certain colours on top of the other. Therefore, I would assume that it may not be anything to worry about, however I would still say it is worth getting checked out with your GP just to be sure!
In order to be tested for dyslexia in the UK you need to contact your local DAC (Dyslexia Action Centre) to arrange an assessment. If you click here you can search to find the closest DAC to you. You can also contact your branch for a free 30 minute consultation where you can ask for advice. If I am not mistaken, it does cost to be screened for dyslexia, so it may be worth going to se your GP to discuss your symptoms first to get their opinion before you look into screening and other options, as it may be something else and not dyslexia.
Either way, I hope this helps and I hope you can find the answers you need! - Adrienne
