in time i will leave the city // for now i will stay alive

i read a story today

about a couple who had been separated

enough money raised

to make sure they were reunited

the story brought tears to my eyes

i thought about my own boyfriend

and how apartheid

never forced us apart without end

how lucky we are in the land of the free

to have rooves over our heads

to wake each morning in relative peace

to cuddle our loved ones safe in our beds

i weep so often for all the lives lost

anger coursing through my veins

at what point does the cost

become so great that they put an end to the pain?

and when will it be true

that any world leader can truly be praised

not for standing on the side of the red or the blue

but for all of the lives they will have fought to save?
