Just a lil' snippet of something I'm planning... prompted by Chris Stapleton's Fire Away, and this picture, shared by the marvelous @therebeccaw.

No warnings, just feels. I really do recommend that you listen to the song while reading this, though.

Honey, load up your questions

Jake pushes his chair back to stand but Grace doesn’t make a move, legs pulled up to her chest, her whole body tucked into the soft armchair, head resting on her hand, her gaze lost. The tears had subsided a little, but her eyes were still shimmering.

He closes the distance between them in a few steps, stopping in front of her and extending a hand.

“Come on.”

She doesn’t flinch. Jake exhales.

Grace turns her head slowly to look up at him. He looks impossibly tall from that angle, his imposing presence looming over her. His eyebrows are creased, jaw clenched so tight it might have been screwed shut.

Still, he doesn’t look mad. She has yet to decipher what emotions are lurking behind those narrow green eyes.

Choose the words that cut like a razor

And all that I'll say

“Grace… please.”

Take your best shot, show me what you got

Honey, I'm not afraid

With a sigh that should have sounded more exasperated, she unfurls from her almost fetal position, relying on his hand for balance until she’s standing in front of him. He doesn’t let go of her hand; on the contrary, Jake pulls her flush to him, taking her by surprise. His other arm wraps around her waist, ready to rein her in if she tries to get away, but it doesn’t happen. Grace’s body melds into his with ease, her head pressed against his chest, facing away from him, her hand resting on his shoulder.

It’s when he starts swaying to the song with her that she sighs again, a shaky sound that has Jake pulling her even closer, moving slowly with her from side to side, their feet shuffling softly over the wooden floor.

Your love might be my damnation

But I'll cry to my grave

He rests his chin on the top of her head, his eyes closed, taking in the moment, taking her in - she’s here, in his arms. And he will not let her go.

Carefully, he places a kiss on her hair, lips lingering there, waiting for her reaction. It comes when she lifts up her head to look at him. Her eyes are still a little misty, but they no longer look sad.

Rear back and take aim

And fire away...
