It happened over the course of two weeks. Lionel had one of his associates drug Lex’s scotch, and as Lex was quite fond of drinking, it was easy enough to push him well over the edge. Maybe Lex would have noticed himself if it hadn’t been so close to his near-death experience after the plane crash. He was already speaking with a psychiatrist, what more could he do?
He was jumpy and paranoid, and entirely on edge and no matter how much he wanted to trust those around him, it was impossible. He knew he wasn’t in his right mind, but the truth seemed to weave in and out. He couldn’t be sure of anything, even as he tried to claim his sanity--that he wasn’t crazy, this was all a plot against him. And it was, of course--but that didn’t mean Lex would get his way.
Lionel got what he wanted. Lex drove everyone away with his increasingly violent and erratic behavior and was committed to Belle Reve. Anything he said would be thought the ravings of a mad man (including Clark’s powers; but he’d seen, he knew). Over the next few months, Lex attempted escape twice. The first was when Clark visited him, and the second was after his first electroshock therapy.
He remained stuck in the institution for eight months until...they were done toying with him, really. The point had been to make Lex forget everything he thought he knew (things about Lionel, that Lionel didn’t want getting out), but no matter what they did, his memories remained intact. At least, most of them did. Every time he swallowed the pills they gave him, or tested on him, Lex would find his memories jumbled and confused, and even though he was sure they were all real--it wasn’t so easy to be sure. And Lionel made sure he had no one.
When testing changed from simply trying to erase his memories, to trying, instead, to test his meta ability, that was when he stopped actively struggling. The drugs helped then, to dull what was torture going by ‘experimental-treatments’. He came out of the ordeal wanting nothing more than to make sure his father paid for it all.
