honestly I'm a single issue voter on "make abortion easier and cheaper and more encouraged", and so one could say I... mildly disagree with you, but I really admire that you're the kind of person to respond to an abortion debate by suggesting we all go out and try and help people and donate money to save kids from malaria. It's better than having angry internet discourse. <3
Thank you for saying this. I think it’s really unlikely that I’m going to change anyone’s mind on this issue by yelling at people on the internet (maaaaybe civil debate, but that’s easier suggested than done), and I have very little faith that I can change things in this area through political activism, so I try to focus on those areas where I think I can have a meaningful impact.
There are some very important things we disagree on, things that are matters of life and death–but there are a lot of matters of life and death in this world, and a lot of lesser problems in addition to those. If there are some important actions that we all agree would be good to take, then I want as many people as possible to get together and make those things happen. It’s a better use of time than arguing about policies that most of us will never be able to affect.
The malaria charity is the Against Malaria Foundation, btw, if you’re not familiar with it. They distribute bed nets in areas with high rates of malaria. It’s the most cost-effective way I know of to prevent people’s deaths, particularly the deaths of pregnant women and of children under five years old. I encourage you to look into it if that sounds like something you’d like to be part of.
