Every Record I Own - Day 362: Eagle Twin The Thundering Heard
This record came out last year to very little fanfare, which is a real shame. A lot of it is surely due to the fact that The Thundering Heard didn’t get a lot of press coverage, and I imagine that’s due to the fact that Eagle Twin rarely tours, and I assume their label doesn’t invest a ton of money into promotion when they know the band won’t be out on the road doing their part to fuel album sales. But we can still thank Southern Lord for at least putting out the album, as it’s an absolute barnburner.
Eagle Twin’s reclusive nature might not sell records, but it certainly adds to their charm and mystique. Here you have two older dudes that live in the relative isolation of Mormon country building their own aluminum necked guitars, Model T knock-off amps, and elaborate speaker cabinets, and then when they rear their heads every half-a-decade they unleash these ungodly heavy expressionistic mash-ups of down-tuned stoner dirges, tone-worshiping doom, and adventurous free-form freakouts. I don’t mean to downplay either the High on Fire and Sleep albums that came out last year, but if either of those albums were pertinent to your interests, The Thundering Heard would not only be up your alley, but would likely be a contender for the metal record of the year.
