The rest of my January NYC Safari

On Saturday morning (January 11), Neal texted that Evan Christopher was on Sarah King's jazz brunch gig about 20 blocks away. I got there for the last set.

That's David Langlois, one of my favorite percussionists. Then Sarah, Felix Lemerle on guitar, Aidan O'Donnell on bass and Evan Christopher on clarinet. Lovely way to spend a Saturday morning.

Of course i stayed Sunday to catch the Ear Regulars at the Ear Inn. Neal Miner on bass, Jay Rattman on sax, Felix on guitar and Jon Erik Kellso leading the band on trumpet. That's Phillup deBucket with that 20 hanging out of its mouth.

I could tell that The Ear was the best gig in town because Michael Steinman and Matt Rivera were there. Michael is the curator of one absolutely amazing blog, called Jazz Lives. He says you can pronounce "lives" as a noun (long i) or a verb (short i). Matt Rivera is a jazz scholar with a lovely four-part lecture series on the history of jazz. Here's a link to episode one.

7:30 AM: Slept till then with alarm at 7:30 AM as I had tested out bars last night (water only and for just a few hours) and hit the hay at 10:30 AM. 

8:30 AM: I’m in the zone for my day and someone very kind takes time to look at me and say “good morning” and I look quickly and kindly say good morning but do wish I had stopped to say hello. Next time I will.

Every Tuesday, bikers flock to the Ear Inn, a bar inside an historic building in the Hudson Square neighborhood of New York City. Here, you'll meet an array of people as well as their bikes, ranging from bankers, musicians, writers, wall streeters, and their bikes, ducati's, hondas, triumphs, yamahas and customs. This is where the young and the old can come together, have a beer, and talk bikes.

The Ear Inn. SoHo. Located on Spring Street, The Ear Inn (est. 1817), is a designated landmark of NYC and on the National Register of Historic Buildings of the U.S. Department of the Interior. It is the oldest working bar in NYC. The house was built for James Brown (not the entertainer), who was an aid to George Washington during the revolution. Brown is actually portrayed in the Emanuel Leutze painting of Washington crossing the Delaware River (the only black man in the painting).

The building is one of very few Federal style houses left in the city and is pretty much in it's original condition. Over the years it's been a spiritual establishment, brewery, restaurant, speakeasy (during Prohibition), boarding house, smuggler's den and a brothel. I guess if a building is around long enough it has served many purposes! The Inn is also said to be haunted by the ghost of a sailor named Mickey who is still waiting for his clipper ship to return to the river.

During prohibition, the bar was simply known as 'The Green Door', (after all, a speakeasy wouldn't put a sign out front)! The bar remained nameless until 1977 when new owners wanted to name the bar. Because of very strict rules regarding the naming and signing of a landmark building, the establishment was named 'Ear' after the music magazine published years ago upstairs. A close look at the sign reveals a neon 'BAR' with the 'B' altered into an 'E'. Today New Yorkers still refer to the bar as 'The Green Door'.
