why do cows in sanctuaries still have their ear tags? is it because it's painful to take them off?
It depends on the country, but in many places it’s a legal requirement. It’s a piece of legislation which just never really took into account the existence of animal sanctuaries or animals who wouldn’t be entered into the food chain, and so would not need to be counted as part of what we in the U.K. call “The National Herd.” It’s completely pointless for sanctuary animals, they get infected, they can get caught and pulled out- it’s just one of those outdated laws that has never been changed unfortunately.
Sometimes I find that cows I meet have ear tags that I could remove easily and painlessly with some scissors if I made sure that the cow trusts me enough to stay still. Do you think it would make any difference if I cut them off?
Your intentions are good but the farmer would just put them back on which would be painful, so you’re betting off avoiding it. I don’t think it hurts once they’re actually on regardless, so it’d do more harm than good.
