Jackie Lee - African Boo-Ga-Loo (1968)
I actually saw this 45 in a store the other day, but it looked like it had been run over by a truck so I didn’t buy it. A good copy would have had me jumping for joy. I have several crate-digging rules and one is that I will listen to any song that has the word boogaloo in the title. It rarely fails and this is no exception. Jackie Lee was actually Earl Nelson, of Bob and Earl fame.

The smouldering ballard 'Baby it's over', Bob and Earl's first Mirwood release, was almost an afterthought. It was due out in 1965 as Mirwood 5507 but Jackie Lee's [Earl Nelson's] 'The Duck' had soared up the US charts and there was no point in trying to promote a career as a duo when he was doing so well on his own. The record eventually came out 10 releases later. Like the earlier Marc, Chene, and Tempe releases it was arranged by Gene Page and could well have been a recording from those days. Mirwood had a record of using up old tracks, as they did with Earl Nelson's 'Ooh Honey Baby' on the B-Side of 'The Duck'. 'Baby it's over' reached #26 R & B in July 1966, Bob & Earl's highest US Chart placing

I now have a copy of the article which includes Tony Hall’s comments on Bob and Earl’s ‘Harlem Shuffle’. 'This is on Sue. George tells’ me he’s heard that it’s really Ben E. King and Bobby 'Rockin’ Robin’ Day. Can anyone confirm this?’
Well as I wrote when I posted 'Harlem Shuffle’ last year 'Bob and Earl’ were Bob Relf and Earl Nelson (who also recorded as Jackie Lee) - Northern Soul Heroes both in their won rights and as a due. But George was not entirely barking up the wrong tree as Bobby Day (Robert Byrd) was the original 'Bob’ before Bob Relf
It has been said that 'Harlem Shuffle’ was George’s favourite record and this may be due to the fact it was No.1 on George’s list
