Drawing in preparation for @rubberpassione Fallout 76 inspired cap commission. The Wendigo is an evil spirited mythical creature in (certain) Native American mythology, who is bloodthirsty, cannibalistic and possesses an insatiable lust for flesh. In a non-spiritual view it can be seen as a metaphorical embodiment of the depths of depravity caused by bleak winter famines that may lead people to cannibalise each other in order to survive. Serving as a sort of warning if that line is crossed. Yet since it appears in a coal mine in a brilliant franchise of post-apocalypse survival games, it makes me think of the ravishing nature of power and greed within the industrial society; perhaps serving as a reminder of what would be unleashed if the bombs really did drop one day, or any other industrial threat to life on Earth. It reminds me of this, a speech by Calgacus, leader of the Caledonian Confederacy (of ‘pagan’ tribes against The Romans) “These plunderers of the world, after exhausting the land by their devastations, are rifling the ocean: stimulated by avarice, if their enemy be rich; by ambition, if poor; unsatiated by the East and by the West: the only people who behold wealth and indigence with equal avidity. To ravage, to slaughter, to usurp under false titles, they call empire; and where they make a desert, they call it peace.” In my mind the Wendigo is the literal spiritual embodiment of that destructive greed. Check yourself before you wreck yourself :) (P.s. Tacitus famously paraphrased that quote, Tacitus being one of the eye witnesses of Christ’s crucifixion by the Romans. And I heard the quote via Dan Carlin who is great.) #nocap #cap #fallout76 #wendigo #earlewilliams #falloutlore #crustyfashion #pencildrawing #hb #staedler #design #paintingprep #illustration #streetwear #gamergirl #gamergear #nuclearapocalypse #desolation #depravity #postapocalypse #wasteland (at The Wastelands) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXdztwYtVdf/?utm_medium=tumblr
