JBS observes a 10 month school year, September through June. Full day students are enrolled in a 12 month program, which includes ten months of Montessori and two months of our summer program. Students who only attend Montessori classes are enrolled in a 10 month program, but are welcome to attend our summer program by request.
The Montessori philosophy is based on a child's need for freedom within limits, and the concept of a prepared environment using the specially designed Montessori instructional materials. These stimulate a child's natural curiosity and desire to learn. Montessori education centers on a child's most sensitive learning period: 18 months to 9 years - during which time they absorb and learn from their environment at a very rapid rate.
Julia Brown believes very strongly in the Montessori Method as Maria Montessori originally developed it. As such, The Julia Brown Schools are pure and traditional Montessori schools. Through balanced classes with mixed ages and individual attention, our Montessori environment fosters your child's desire for learning and aids in his or her growth.
We work with nature in helping children meet their developmental needs. Our program accepts the endless energies, the creative impulses, and the insatiable curiosities of children and gradually directs their efforts into rewarding channels.
The objectives for each student in The Julia Brown School program are as follows:
• To develop an independent learning attitude and habits composed of initiative, persistence and a sense of order.
• To learn the basic foundations for reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, science, geography, physical
movement and exposure to the arts (music, drawing, creative movement).
• To sharpen their ability to perceive, observe and judge the world around them accurately.
• To develop acceptable social patterns for group activities.
• To develop the physical body through healthy meals, through work and play in the classroom and on the
playground.
These objectives are accomplished through a combination of the following components:
• Providing a physical environment and Montessori instructional materials designed specifically for young children to
progress naturally from simple ideas to the complex. Concepts are presented first in concrete form and after, at the
appropriate age of development, in the abstract.
• Using self-pacing, self-motivation and a Director/Directress to encourage each child to reach his/her maximum
potential, independent of age.
• Having a well-equipped play area.
• Having year-round, regular intervals of outdoor play.
• Providing guidelines to parents for preparing healthy lunches for their children
• Providing healthy snacks that emphasize nutrient-rich foods.
