FAQs about the Cornwell Early Learning Center

Urban Ventures is abuzz as we near the opening of the Cornwell Early Learning Center. Volunteers  assembling cribs, new teachers in training, open houses for local families, and the first children enrolling.

Originally scheduled for 2020, the pandemic and events of last summer delayed our opening until this fall. Now that we're close, it's the perfect time to re-introduce you to Urban Ventures newest initiative!

• Why open an Early Learning Center?

Urban Ventures' goal is to prepare and send every child in our neighborhood to college, trade school, or another form of postsecondary education.

Preparing kids for college is multi-faceted. The most successful students have strong families supporting them, mentors guiding them, nutritious food fueling them, teachers and tutors encouraging them, and so much more.

Urban Ventures does all this, but we still want to do more. We asked local principals, teachers, and community partners what else we could do. Most kids in our neighborhood are not kindergarten-ready when they start school. There is a lack of equitable access to early childhood education in our city.

Kids who start behind often get left behind. By opening a center in South Minneapolis, we are bringing high-quality and innovative early education to a community the desperately needs it. And through the support of donors like you we are working to make it accessible and affordable to local families.

• What makes the Cornwell Early Learning Center unique?

The CELC will emphasize social-emotional development. Most structural brain development happens before age five. Providing positive interactions in an academic setting can counteract negative experiences in the future. At the CELC kids will learn how to be successful in a group environment, resulting in higher performance in school.

As a part of Urban Ventures, the CELC can also provide additional unique experiences for children. Farming, athletics, literacy, and music programs are eager to incorporate our newest, youngest pupils.

• How are you partnering with families?

The CELC is a perfect connection point for local families to the Urban Ventures. Not only will we walk alongside parents through their child’s development, CELC families will have also priority access to parenting classes, financial literacy courses, athletics and a host of other programs to support the entire family.

When a child graduates from the Cornwell Early Learning Center it isn’t the end of our partnership. They are still in our cradle-to-career pipeline of support. We’re excited to journey with kids as they grow up and dreaming ahead to when the first CELC kids become college students (and maybe even Act Six Scholars!)

• How many families will you serve?

The Cornwell Early Learning Center will be able to serve 84 kids and their families. Kids' ages will range from 6-week old infants to Pre-K.

• What staff are you adding?

We are adding high-quality, highly-educated teachers that we hope will invest in our community for the long term. Early childhood education is often an underpaid, high-turnover industry.

Also rare among early learning centers, we are hiring a Family Care Coordinator. This dedicated role helps families navigate the confusing process of applying for county aid and other scholarships. Another way to make early childhood education more accessible.

• When does the CELC open?

The Cornwell Early Learning Center will begin serving families in September. A public celebration of the new center will take place spring/summer of 2022, once the outdoor play area is complete. 

• How can I help?

The final piece of construction for the Cornwell Early Learning Center is an outdoor playground for CELC kids. Every kid deserves a safe place to play and we're building one in front of our main building. The play area is also essential for the licensing process.
