Early Reading Tips
Quality talk helps reading and writing. Keep your bedtime as story times. Talk through the day. Think out loud! Encourage sentences, say sentences back. Build vocabulary. Sing lots of nursery rhymes. Reading should be fun!
Don't be afraid of new words. Most words are new to your child. They are used to it. Say a sound for each letter in the alphabet and at least 10 digraphs Read words consistent with their phonic knowledge by sound-blending. Read aloud simple sentences and books that consistent with their phonic knowledge, including some common exception words. Before your child reads a book, first read the title then have a look at the pictures togheter without looking at the words. Relate it to their experiences. But maybe keep the ending for when you read? Have a quick look at the words. Can you see something that looks tricky? A name? A key words that keeps appearing. If so, point it out to your child. As your child is reading get them to point to each word so they can track. This will help focus.
